    menu

Is this a dos menu? what is the computer brand, maybe it has a bios overlay or ??? Very strange after formating & fresh install to get a boot menu. What happens when you select (3)?

it is a pionex with intel333mz. when i boot the prompts are in dos. i just select exit and it completes booting fine. I am just wondering if it is in the autoexec.bat or config.sys. it's been years since i worked with edlin (spelling) dos editing. also i checked the bios and the boot sequence is a,c, scsi. I can't remember if the scsi should be in there. Everything else in cmos looks ok but maybe I'm missing something. I don't have anyting in the a: or d:(cd) drive either. so it can't be picking it up from there. if i choose 1 or 2 it starts the install all over again. also i was thinking that maybe not everything has been installed from the cd and I have to keep selecting the option to install w/o reformatting. ( i have reformatted already) until it gets all that is needed. I did have to start the process several times before i could get to a usable 98 desktop.

If I recall correctly something like this was discussed on the BBS before. I´ve read so many threads lately, preventing me from remebering which it was.

I remember though that some brands that come with Windows preinstalled have a section at the beginning of the HDD directly after the Boot Record or as an extension of the BR containing the system files from which it boots.
If an attempt to install a retail version of Windows on one of these computers is made, certain measures has to be taken to get rid of that "extended boot record ".

I´m not sure about this but I think that, from a DOS startup disk, FDISK has to be used to delete all partitons. Next step is to create one primary DOS partition and set as active. Further partitioning is optional. Then exit FDISK.

Re-initiate the Master Boot Record by, at the DOS prompt typing:
    FDISK / MBR.

    Finally format the partition(s).

CAVEAT: I´M NOT SURE ABOUT THIS, MY TEFLON MEMORY MAY FAIL ME!!!!!!

    HTH,
    Christer

This comes from an error during the install process! Do not delete this but rename it to autoexec.sav (save). Then reboot. Should not get error now. In a few days and everythinng is running correctly delete it.

You might should check the config.sys

    yes, please.
    Can send to loudcloud49@yahoo.com
    cross your fingres.
it should be something simple like
    :begin
    cls
    c:\windows
    :end

since dos is needed but windows is the operating system.

well I sort of have it. i created the following autoexec.bat file
    @echo off
    set path\windows\windows;c:
    LH c:\mouse\mouse.exe
    doskey
    cls

works but it asks to press anykey to start then a see a little blip of could not find file. however windows 98 starts. What am I missing or have too much of?

    Wait LoudCloud

Nothing to do with MBR! Or Fdisk or format.

You had some kind of failure during the Windows install.

It can now be fixed by windows.

Do what I said for now, you can play with autoexec and config.sys later. For now rename both to autoexec.sav and config.sav.

Windows will set its own path. You had it wrong it should have been c:\windows;c:\windows\command.

Now that you have renamed them, boot up and look in control panel device mgr if you have errors or unknown devices remove those devices then go to "Add new hardware" and let windows find.

If you can do this it will finish up. You may still need to find some drivers.
