I am interested in this spybot thingy to prep a Sony Vaio prior to install of xp pro over home edition. Is it readily available somewheres?

i just read on grcnewsgroups that "The site left this out of the legend: -- means removed as it no longer meets the criteria for spyware "

as in -- Kontiki from the last update

very interesting... trying to find the source of that info, but so far sounds correct

First, I'm sorry that there have been no updates the past weekend. We've been busy adding new targets (more than 60 dialers alone in the past week), but as Spybot-S&D 1.2 is nearing it's release, we decided to make those updates in a slightly improved format only, including MD5 checksums where applicable. While we could offer the same uploads for 1.1 already, 1.2 will be able to use a strongly encrypted database; and as we don't want give it the thieves mentioned in the previous news articles, we will only release a small update this weekend, with the major updates coming next weekend with the planed release of 1.2.

Other good news about updates are that we finally have found and tested a good newsletter software. With the release of 1.2, our Contact page will allow you to subscribe to a newsletter that will inform you about all the news posted here, and more important whenever updates are available. The people who did subscribe to the Yahoo group previously won't need to re-subscribe, as I will be able to import that database. New subscribers will need to click the subscribe button and reply to a confirmation mail."

We are proud to announce that Spybot-S&D 1.2 is ready for the public! Over the past two month, we've been working hard to add some nice new features as well as to make the whole thing easier for newbies. Here's a short list of the most important changes:

Introduced Easy mode for newbies, Advanced mode for pros
Improved detections to avoid false positives (MD5 checksums)
Improved detection mechanisms for morphing files (dynamic checksums)
Added new Immunize section as a preventive measure against spyware
Improved help (including description of each page, quick help & help buttons on each page)
Added silent mode command line parameters

Fixed bug that prevented all user accounts to be scanned

This update is available using the usual ways. You can use the integrated updater, where you will see a new Main application update, and a new Includes update after you've downloaded that one. Or you could use the manual update, using the links at the bottom of this mail. Finally, the main download has also been updated, but is not yet available on all mirrors.

anyone using the latest SBv1.2 may have noticed that the program isn't checking for and clearing out cookies and other history and cache features and usage tracks like 1.1 did so well.

it appears from perusing the SB forum that this is a bug they are aware of and working on.

i like that SB found a browser DSO (data source object) exploit security hole (still running ie5.5 on one operating system), and i believe that SB repaired it too via registry entry.

i'm having a couple minor issues with the new GUI, but nothing drastic.

any input from other users welcome and appreciated.

i just got some input from the SB forum, and the "fix" that worked for me... and it was just a settings issue...

In Settings->Filesets, you must check both Usage Tracking and Tracks.uti.

Also in Settings->Settings, you may need to set all the bullets under Installation to Advanced mode, exit SSD, and run it again

it worked perfect for me!
