Well, last night I installed a new motherboard with an Intel P4 2.4ghz CPU. I put in new ram/video card, and booted up. I tried to go straight into XP (which I know is wrong), and it gave me a blue screen telling me to check hardware and such, can someone give me some advice please?

It would have been best to make some changes in the registry so XP would rescan for hardware.

But since you already have the new mb, boot from CD, install normally until you get to the license screen, press F8 to agree, and XP will then show you found Windows installations. Highlight yours and press R to repair it.

    Just a note:
This may fail if the two installations have different HALs (e.g., if the old mb was a Standard Computer and the new is ACPI-compliant).

Let us know how you make out and write down any errors you may get :)

Well, I got home, plopped in a Windows 98 CD I have and booted off of CD-ROM. Then I chose to Run Setup from CD-ROM. In the process of loading the CD-ROM drivers it locks up with the following error message..:

Scanning PCI Bus using Mechanism #2..

It seems to be having trouble finding the drivers for my CD-ROM drive, got any ideas on how to overcome this? Do I need to download a boot disk of some sort or what?

    Thanks,
    Travis

    Ummmm......

I guess I assumed you were installing XP. Was it 98 you wanted advice on?

If the CD-ROM is the only problem for now--unplug it and put it in later (provided, of course, that it is not the one you are using to install). This is good advice for all hardware. If you don't need it for setup, remove/disconnect it until setup completes and add the devices afterward, one-by-one.

You may also want to enter the BIOS setup if you haven't already to be sure all is well there. If you have the option for defaults or "Setup Defaults ", choose them.

My original question involved the install of WindowsXP , but I forgot I left it in my dads laptop (and he is out of town). So I scrounged up a Win98 CD, and am going to upgrade later. I did manage to download a WinXP Boot disk from www.bootdisk.com and windows 98 setup is going smoothly so far, thank you for the help :)

Knowing all too well how hard waiting is, I probably would have done what you did ;) . Still, when you do retrieve the XP disk, you would be better off doing a clean installation from that after formatting than upgrading from 98.

You can do a full and complete XP installation even from the upgrade CD. You will only need to insert 98 for a minute to prove you are eligible for the upgrade. You will also not have the clearly superior features of the NTFS file-system with 98 or the upgrade.

    Have fun.
