I have installed a new 128 bit sound card.
Currently there is no sound at all
Computer is an Amd 350 running Win 98 SE
the drivers and applicationsa were installed from a disc marked "PCI sound card driver "
they appear in the device manager listed under "sound .video and game controllers" as "C<8738/C3CX PCI audio device ." As well the excellent diagnostic program aida detects the driver.
There is no sounda t all. I have tried swapping the speaker input into all the 4 outputs.
When I select the driver under system properties the following message appears under driver status "Windows stopped responding while attempting to start this device ".
    Any ideas ??
     :(

"Windows stopped responding while attempting to start this device ".

Reads like an IRQ conflict that does not show in the DM.

This very often due to an Internal Modem not wanting to make changes. Many times they will STOP a Sound card or NIC from setting up properly. Or at least they look like they are set right but still won't work.

Internal Modems do not ( or won't ) allow shareing of an IRQ.

All Checking willl report all is setup properly. But still does not work.

    BillyBob,
there is no internal or external modem at all.
however there is a network card.
what settings should be changed and how do you get to these settings ?

    thanks

HMMMM !! I am lost now. I myself have not had this problem since I trashed and internal Modem YEARS ago.

You say no internal Modem. Does that mean there is no built in ( onboard ) modem also ?

How do you get online ? Dial-up requires a Modem. DSL or Cable use the NIC. I think DSL uses the NIC but am not sure.

Externals we do not worry about anyway.

It may have something to do with the BIOS. In the BIOS there should be a selection Plug n Play OS. That seems to work better when set to NO.

But I do deffinetly lean toward an IRQ conflict.

OOPS!!. Is there a possibility that the MB has onboard audio that needs to be disabled ?

    and plug and play (pray)

    BillyBob,
    thanks again !
    well here we go
I went to the bios. The current settings at "Plug and Play Os "
    are
PNP/PCI config set to "no "
    resources controlled by "auto "
reset config set to "disabled "

I have tried various configurations to no avail.
I tried start >run > asd but the system froze

As for the question as to why no modem > I am running off
a cable connection hence no need for a modem.
That is the one thing that is cheaper up here. High speed
connections high speed residential are the equivalent of $ 30 us and lite packages (OK for web browsing without tying up your phone line) is $ 30 us with tax.
By the way the new sound card is in tight.
I am going to uninstall it. Big improvement. oh well !!!
