In XP home I am a lone user, logging in as Administrator.

I created in Control Panel/User accounts a new account, using "limited account ". (I want to add a friend's son, but I don't want him to know about my secret life). ;)

When I restart and click the new (limited account) icon, the system tells: "Loading your personal settings ". After a while, the old (Administrator) icon appears. Clicking again the new user starts the same process anew. If now I click the old, Administrator, icon, windows loads normally.

Question: How can I program my lone machine to have several users, and only one with administrator rights?

    TIA,

I've seen this happen once..when a limited user account was set up but the administrator's account wasn't passworded. Apparently, XP (or at least the XP on that one system) got terribly confused about what it was supposed to do.

So, if you didn't enter a password for the administrator account, enter one and see if that solves the problem.

Another thing to try is to delete the user account you set up and try setting up another to see if XP is happier the second time around. ;)

    Thank you Miz.

I created a second user with limited access. I tried two modes of logging into this user:

    1) At startup. I click the new user, and nothing happens. Impossible to login in with this identity.

    2) After being logged in with my old Administrator account, using Switch Users. When I click this second user I just created, a message windows pops-up:
    -----------------------------------------------------------------
    User Environment:

Windows cannot log you on because your profile cannot be loaded. Check that you are connected to the network or that your network is functioning correctly.

    File couldn't be found
    -------------------------------------------------------------------

I won't follow your other advice about using a password. I hate them.
    ;)

Arie, no effect without a cause.

I need to test as a beta tester an application, logging in with administration rights and then as a limited access user, both.

    That's why.

The story about letting a friend use my machine is true, but it is not the main issue. When this time arrives, I am aware that I'll be forced to use a pswd. Nevertheless I admit that the suggestion seems to me somehow unrealistic. I've made a thorough search of MS, and nothing of the sort is mentioned.

    Thank you for caring,
