My USB ports are not working. I went into Device Manager and deleted them and then restarted my computer but it asks me to insert the "Windows 98 CD ", which I don't have. I only have the 2 recovery CD's. Can anyone help me?

I went away for a week and my husband & daughter---who know very little about how to use a computer got online and printed off some info. He put computer into suspend and that's how I found it when I returned. I tried to use my printer and it wouldn't work. I have since reinstalled the printer using parallel cable and that works, but really want it to work using usb.

    Thanks in advance. :(

Thanks--how do I install after downloading?

Thank you. I found the site and looks like this is what I need. My next question is: How do I install these after I download?
Do I need to go in to Device Manager and delete the USB Hub?
Should I not have any USB devices plugged into the ports when I install and if so, when do I plug them in? Hope you can help me out with this. I have Windows 98 but when I bought the extra external USB ports the guy at Best Buy told me that only Windows 98SE had USB ports. Do you know anything about this?
When I first hooked up the device, everything worked, but now nothing works---not even the two hubs on my harddrive.
    Thanking you in advance.

As far as I know, if you have done all updates to win98 via windows update- there is not much difference between win98 and win98se. If anyone else knows different, please correct me if I'm wrong. If it was originally working I wouldn't think that was the problem.
Open the device manager. Look for the universal serial bus controller in the list double click on it and see what issues there are with the port (exclamation marks, etc). for example I have listed 2 USB Root Hubs and 2 Via Tech 3038 PCI to USB Universal Host Controllers. Right click on each one and select properties then click on the driver tab at the top of the box and select the update driver button. When it asks for a location- point it to the folder where you downloaded the drivers.
Don't have any devices plugged in until the ports are recognized in device manager. Once they're showing o.k., then try reinstalling your usb devices.

If that doesn't work, try removing them and then rebooting. Windows should detect the new hardware and start the add new hardware wizard. when it asks for win98 cd point it to the location where you downloaded the drivers- You can select the location on your harddrive instead of using the CD.

    Hope this helps!

Sometimes when USB devices stop working, all you need to do is shut down the computer, disconnect the power to the USB device (just unplug it from the electrical outlet!) wait a minute, then replug it and restart the computer. That happens every so often with my USB scanner.

If you've already deleted the USB section in device manager and need to reinstall the drivers then here is a page for adding a usb driver in Win95B that you might helpful for the screenshots, as well as the information under "Device Driver Wizard" (middle of page):

    http://www.aesystems.com/usb_install.html

I just helped someone with a Windows98 machine with USB problems and he went into Device Manager and removed ALL the Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller entries, one at a time untill all were gone, and the entire usb section DISAPPEARED. Then he rebooted and had Win98 redetect the USB devices and reinstall the drivers. When Windows asked for the location of the USB drivers he DID NOT select "Other Location" and he DID NOT need to insert his Win98 CD. He also did not need to download any Win98 USB drivers. All he needed to do was to type in:
    C:\Windows\System
exactly as indicated on the above webpage.

The reinstall fixed his USB problems.

PS My Win95B machine came with working USB ports, already enabled in the Bios, USB supplement drivers installed and ready to go so that guy at Best Buy didn't have a clue!

    Problem Solved---thanks

    To all of you,
Wanted to let you know that I got the problem fixed. I emailed HP and they told me what I had to do. For everyone's info, when it asks to have the Windows 98 CD inserted, I just had to type in the window-----windows\options\cabs\

That worked and then I had to reinstall my hardware. Thanks to all for helping me out.

    Hi Pam,

Glad you got it all fixed.

It is always a good idea to contact the PC maker support site if possible (as long as they don't charge you an arm and a leg!)
Lots of computer makers place the Windows cab files (and sometimes driver files) in C:\Windows\Options\Cabs so any time you are asked for a Windows CD you can point there.

Thanks for posting back with the outcome
