Our computer crashed last week. I have successful reinstalled everything except Microsoft Office. Each time I try and re-install it the computer crashes and I have to start over and reinstall Win98. The problem occurs after rebooting once the installation process has occurred. THe following messages appear:

CAPl: the install failed. rsabase.dll doesn't match the signature file or the value in the registry?

    After this appears:

Error occurred calling "DllRegisterServer" in C:\windows\system\rsabase.dll (HRESULT=8000ffff)

This message is then followed by:

Explorer-the program has performed an ilegal operation and will shut down.

THe computer at this point stops functioning. Shutting the computer off does nothing. In fact you cannot even boot into safe mode. Using a rescue disk has been the only think that works.

    Thanks for any suggestinons.

I got so many hits doing a search for "rsabase.dll" that it's impossible to sort through all of them. But it looks like there could be a problem with the version that's being installed or it isn't registering properly. If you want to search through them yourself do a search for rsabase.dll at http://www.google.com/

Try this before you try to install MS Office...
    CAUSE
This issue can occur if the Schannel.dll, Rsabase.dll, or Rsaenh.dll files are absent, damaged, or the wrong version.

    RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, use the appropriate method.

    Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me)
Start the computer in Safe mode. To do this, restart your computer, press and hold down the CTRL key after your computer completes the Power On Self Test (POST), and then click to choose Safe Mode from the Startup menu.

Click Start , click Run , and then type msconfig .

Extract the following files from the Windows Me cab files located at Windir \Options\Install (or the location of a Windows Me flat) into the windir \system folder:

    Rsabase.dll
    Rsaenh.dll
    Schannel.dll

For additional information about how to determine which folder Windows is installed in, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
Q305792 How to Determine Which Folder Windows Is Installed In
Verify the version of Windir \System\Advapi32.dll, and if the file is not at least 4.90.0.3000, extract a new copy from Windir \Options\Install into the windir \system folder.

Re-register each of these three .dll files. To do so, click Start , click Run , and then type the following commands (where windir is the name of your Windows folder):

    regsvr32 windir \system\schannel.dll
    regsvr32 windir \system\rsabase.dll
    regsvr32 windir \system\rsaenh.dll
Restart the computer in Normal mode.
