So this morning I went to check my emails (outlook.com) and received a notification that my One Drive was over the limit and that I would no longer be able to send/receive emails! It gave me the option to "manage" my storage.
It showed a bunch of files listed there, so I would check them and choose "delete". After doing many of them it showed I now had enough storage!
Then it hit me, if I delete those files from One Drive that I might also lose them on my laptop!! Oh dear! So I tried to "restore" them from the trash, but they wouldn't as that put me over the limit again!
So I opted in to buy more storage. Couldn't find the files that I had deleted (nothing showed up in the trash can now!) But there was a section that showed a bunch of different folders. I selected them all and chose "download". Opened up the file & saved them to my desktop.
I really don't feel the need to have any of my files, etc. saved on One Drive and wonder if I can now delete those files on it? I don't want to have to be paying for the One Cloud storage every month & if what I've done is sufficient I'd like to cancel that subscription.
Hope this is understandable in what I wish to accomplish and look forward for any/all assistance or advise given!

How many emails and files do you have saved? You could move them to a thumb drive and then delete them from the cloud. Thumb drives are cheap now a days.

    Hi,

Yes I agree with Bill. Just log out of OneDrive completely on your computer so OneDrive is not active and then download whatever files you have on OneDrive online and store them on a USB drive and then never log into OneDrive again. Its another way for Microsoft to force a paid subscription on users and that is why I never use features like that.

Thank you for your replies. I think I have made a bigger mess of this "One Drive" thing than I thought.
I had uninstalled the "One Drive" app from my laptop along time ago thinking this would stop my files automatically being stored there. (Can't remember if I had actually turned off the syncing function prior to uninstalling the app?) So naturally it was a shock to me when I had received that notification in my email that my storage was full!
So I have no way to log out of One Drive from my laptop only from the One Drive online.
I did purchase a USB flash drive but am now clueless on how to save them from One Drive? (For the life of me, I don't remember how I downloaded those files to my desktop!
Here's a screenshot of my One Drive files (online) Screen shot one drive files.jpg

I notice there are several folders in there that seem not to contain anything? What are those for??
Again I thank all of you for your help with my bumbled up mess!

Use this link to completely remove OneDrive from your system, How to Completely Uninstall OneDrive in Windows 11.

Then with OneDrive online, download the files you need then remove the rest so that your storage online goes to zero amount used. After that you will never need to log into OneDrive online again and won't have to deal with running out of online storage.

Thanks for trying to help me with this mess I've made! Think most of this is completely over my head. ( I've never been very computer literate!)
Looked at the link you sent to uninstall OneDrive completely and the 1st step shown was how I removed the app. If I need to continue following the rest of the directions given I know I'll end up making things worse!
I did purchase a USB flash drive and downloaded all the files from Onedrive to that. Then put those files that were located in Onedrive's folders into the trash bin.
I have also canceled my "recurring" subscription to giving me more storage space. So I will only have that until the end of January.
I believe my outlook.com email is still connected and storing on OneDrive at this time, but I'm only at 1G of storage, so totally under the 5g allowed. I'm not ready to pursue this any further until I see what happens after my initial subscription expires.

Ok, understood. You may want to consider having a local computer technician assist you with this request as they should be able to get to the root of the issue and help you manage your online storage.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to try and rectify this myself. While it appears that only my email is currently being backed up/stored in the OneDrive I could live with that (& keep it monitored to not go over the 5g free storage). I'll definitely look for a local technician (especially after my subscription actually expires.) if I should run into further issues.
