I’ve been using Microsoft Money as a check register since 2003. Yes, I’m a dinosaur that still writes checks and keeps track of my debit card transactions. At my age, I’m not planning to change that method of handling my finances. Money has been a helpful program for me as it does all of the math for me. I now have 22 years of data tied up in it. That data has been helpful with its various categories and reports showing me where I spend my money.

Around 2012 or so I bought a new computer, going from Windows XP to Windows 7. Microsoft no longer supported the Money program, but I was able to download and install a sunset edition of Money. I had backed up my Money data and somehow was able to transfer it into the sunset edition. Wish I could remember how.

In 2025 I bought my current computer running Windows 11. The previous computer still worked so I set it up in the basement. I would turn it on and off a couple times a month to enter transactions. We used the new computer for pretty much everything else. Once a month, when I balanced against the paper statement my bank still sends me, I would back up to a flash drive before shutting it all down. The computer now won’t boot up. I think it’s a goner so I will take it to our local city service department where they accept electronic waste. I’ll first remove the hard drive.

I was able to download and install a sunset edition of Microsoft Money Plus Deluxe. I have that 22 years’ worth of data on the flash drive but I can’t figure out how to import it into the Money program again. The file type says it’s a .mbf file. It’s 29.9MB and was last modified on December 1, 2025, which was the last time I used the program on the old computer.

Any assistance in accomplishing this will be appreciated.

I would copy the MBF to the hard drive..... Then in theory all you should have to do is:

Use Built-in Restore (for backups): In Money Plus, go to File > Restore Backup and follow the prompts to select your .mbf file.
