A friend asked me if he should get rid of McAfee on his 2 Windows desktop computers. My short answer to him was ..."Yes, and make sure Windows Defender is activated."
However, as we discussed it, he told me he had a McAfee package that covered 6 devices - his 2 desktops, two android tablets, and two android smartphones. When the tablets and smartphones entered the conversation, I backed off and said not to do anything till I had a chance to research. I know very little about security on smartphones and tablets.
My question now is "Do android devices come with preinstalled AV type software packages that do the job. Or should one install apps such as McAfee?" I tried searching this question but all I could get was results trying to sell me AV packages.

Most of the manufacturers have a pre installed AV app. Android is not very prone to windows like virus but it's susceptible to fake apps & permission issues.
I have been using Android phones for last 10 years & haven't downloaded any anti virus.

The stock android operating system from Google has no AV app in it. Other manufacturers such as Samsung may come with an AV app. I have been using android since its first public release and have never used or needed an AV app. Android is built on the Linux kernel and is much more secure than a Windows operating system. The only real threat on an android device is from installing untrusted or malicious apps. By default, android will not allow apps from anywhere but the Google Play store, but this setting can toggled off to allow apps from anywhere to be manually installed.

Thanks rsinfo and TonyT. Very enlightening information - exactly what I was looking for - and neither of you tried to sell me an AV package. From what you say,we are the primary security threat to our Android devices by what we download and install. Rest assured we will stay within the confines of the Google Play Store.
Thanks so much for the responses.
