Quick and dirty, quality, free (or cheap) video clipper/converter?

I used to love AVC, aka Any Video Converter, for this. I could convert between many file types and do basic snips to make clips, in a comparable quality to the original.

Sadly, AVC has made "upgrades," which not only have omitted a number of the previous basic features it once had, but the newer versions seem prone to hanging, and support seems to have no answer to it. So, the question is, are there any useful and functional utilities that might take the place of AVC? Might even be better than it ever was?
