This is a strange one. There is one icon that is placing itself on top of all the other icons. The culprit is the icon for Wal-Mart Connect (Wal-mart's dial-up access) which is not even installed anymore! I've tried everything I can think of including: System Restore, changing resolutions back and forth to reset the icons, and removing every mentioning of Wal-Mart from the registry. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know.

    Hi Branic
    Welcome to the boards.
I've done an extensive search, and have come up with absolutely nothing. So, let's try the hit and miss approach?
Go into tools.....internet options.....then connections. Is that Walmart dial up listed there?

    Had another thought.

Restart Windows in Safe mode. To do so, restart your computer, press and hold down the CTRL key after your computer completes the Power On Self Test (POST), and then choose Safe Mode from the Startup menu.

Use Windows Explorer to remove the ShellIconCache file from the Windows folder.

NOTE: You need to be able to view hidden files to see the ShellIconCache file. To view hidden files in Windows 98, click Folder Options on the View menu in Windows Explorer, click the View tab, click Show All Files, and then click OK.
    Restart your computer

I had a similiar problem when using ME. I would get rid of Icons on the Desktop and ME would put them right back on the next restart.

After you get rid of the unwanted item. ( if you can )

Shut down System Restore and let it get rid of the existing files.

Then reload it ( after the unwanted item is hopefully gone ) and let it make new files. Other wise the unwanted item may reappear again if a previous restore point is used. Anything that was on the system when the restore point was made will be put back.

It is also possible that if the system restore is shut down the item may disappear also. This has happened with a Virus showing up even on a clean machine. System Restore was shut down and the Virus indication left also.

Windows ME is one of the TOUGHEST Operating Systems to get rid of anything. You take it out ME puts it back. I lived with that for four days and tossed ME ( CD and ALL ) into the nearest trash bin.
