My son wants to buy me the components to build a new computer that will run on Windows 11. I'd like to get feedback from you regarding the components he has chosen. Let me know if you have any concerns or can think of better alternatives within the same price range. I don't need the best of the best, so let's keep this around the level of these components, unless you feel I'd be better off with something else.

    AMD Ryzen 5 5600 3.5 GHz 6-Core Processor
    Gigabyte B550M K Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard
    Silicon Power XPOWER Turbine 16 GB (2 X 8 GB) DDR4-3200 CL16 Memory
ADATA Legend 850 1 TB M.2-2280 PCle 4.0 X4 NVME solid State drive
ASRock Radeon RX6700XT CLD 12G Radeon RX 6700 XT 12 GB Video Card
Lian Li LANCOOL 216 ATX Mid Tower Case
MSI MAG A550BN 550 W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply

I also have a question regarding the CPU cooler. Is the stock cooler good enough, or would I be better off with a Dark Rock Slim BK024, Cooler Master Hyper 212, or something similar?

Hi Barry, All looks good to me. I have the exact same Ryzen CPU and the cooling fan that was with it and for general everyday use it does the cooling without any problems. Should be an excellent rig for you.;)

So the cooler upgrade wouldn't be noticed? The rest of the system looks good, also? Any red flags you see?
What are your suggestions regarding thermal paste? Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut?

My Ryzen CPU was complete with the Wraith Stealth cooler and that has been adequate for my computer usage.
As you would know, the CPU can be purchased on it's own or complete with AMD fan included.
I got the complete AMD pack. No hassles. I figure that if the AMD cooling fan won't do the job and the CPU fails, I will have a legitimate failure claim.
I have used Arctic Silver thermal paste many times without problems.
    Bottom line, ----- your choice.

I have been building AMD CPU's computer for last 10+ years and have yet to encounter any CPU failure due to the supplied CPU fan.
Just go ahead & use the AMD supplied fan. It's more than adequate. If it works in India, it should work anywhere.

I guess I'll stick with the Wraith Stealth. If I can handle the noise from my present computer, I'll be able to handle the extra noise from the Stealth. It will still be much quieter than what I have, though not as quiet as the Dark Rock Slim BK024

You could save the cost if you already have the BeQuiet cooling fan and fitting kit. It will do the job.

I don't have the BeQuiet, so I won't buy it.

I can barely hear the fans on my rig (about 25 decibels I believe).
    AMD fan Wraith Stealth.

When I put this new computer together, I'll be able to use a 1TB SSD, a 500GB SSD, a 250GB SSD, a 750GB HDD and a 160GB HDD. How should I configure this? Which one should be the operating system, which will have the programs installed and where do I store my files? I figure the 750GB HDD can be used for backup. What are your recommendations? Actually, it looks like the mobo has only 2 SATA ports. Would that limit me to using the 1TB and 500GB SSDs only? I'd like the option of another drive as backup, at least. What are your thoughts?

The Lian Li Lancool 216 can handle 4 SSDs + 2 HDDs.

Actually, it looks like it has 2 SATA Express ports and 4 SATA 6Gb/s, so I guess it can handle 6 drives. I've never seen the SATA 6G/s ports before.

I would put the OS on the 250GB NVMe2 SSD.

What would be your recommendations for the other drives?

Maybe the 1TB SSD for the programs and files and the HHD for backup? Can you think of another use for the other 500GB SSD? Maybe music and videos?

I have 4 drives in my computer.

One is 500 GB SSD (OS),one is 1 TB HDD (data), two are 500 GB each for backups.
SInce I moved to OneDrive, I don't need so much storage. My laptop has 250 GB SSD & it's more than enough as all my files are in cloud. Now I don't need much local storage, can access my data from anywhere & on any device. Don't have to bother about backup too.

I understand the ease of using OneDrive, but I can't see paying Microsoft for the added memory necessary. I'd rather just use a HDD to backup only those files I deem important. OneDrive backs up garbage.

My thoughts too. There are many "Cloud storage" areas being offered, but the catch is they want you to pay if you get near full capacity.
I apply the criteria that if I haven't used it in the last 5-7 years --- dump it!
The only stuff I keep is family records and photos/videos.;)

You can backup what you want and NOT what the OneDrive wants to backup.

I directly save my important files on OneDrive, rest are on my computer(s).

Even when you attempt to limit what is backed up, a lot of data backed up still doesn't need to be backed up, and you're not given that much control over what is or isn't backed up. For instance, you can backup your desktop, but what if you only want certain files on your desktop backed up? I removed everything OneDrive backed up, and the majority of it was garbage.

I never backup my desktop or documents or photos folders. I have created folders on my Onedrive & save directly on it without saving it locally.
