It seems that every option to create a bootable USB drive starts with a download of Windows 10, which takes you to the same page that creates the Media Creation Tool file. So, they all result in the same error. Every option starts with "If you have not already, you will need to download a Windows 10 ISO file." That takes you to the same download page.

Yes that is correct and you need to download the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool and follow the instructions. If your Windows 7 computer is not allowing you to download the Media Creation Tool installer then use another system to create a Windows 10 flash drive and download the Media Creation Tool.

Do you have another computer you can use to download the installer? Can you post a screenshot of the error message window?

If you are on a Windows 10 machine, go here https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 and click the "Download Now" button and it will download the Media Creation Tool.

When the download is complete click to open and run the Mediation Creation Tool. It will say "Getting a few things ready..."

Click the "Accept" button on the Windows 10 Setup box that pops up, and it will say "Getting a few things ready..." again.

On the next screen select the "Create installation media (USB flash drive, or ISO file) for another PC" option, then click Next.

The download of Windows.iso file will begin. Since it is 4,783,996,928 bytes it may take a bit, depending on your current download speed, and the speed of your computer.

Hi RL- I have a 100mb hard wired connection so I don't see that cause as valid in the case. I will look at that thread further, though.

Hi Evan, thanks but that didn't work either. I unsuccessfully tried the "empty the Windows/SoftwareDistribution/Downloads folder and update WU from the command line" suggestion commonly found for that error code. I also tried the Security/Unblock idea.

    I haven't tried a clean boot yet.

What do you folks think about this suggestion? https://www.winhelponline.com/blog/media-creation-tool-error-0x80072f8f-0x20000/

Go ahead and run through the fixes in the link you found and see if that solves the issue.

One of the fixes worked!!! It was the one fixing the registry for for TLS security. I will work more on the USB flash drive tomorrow. Thanks!

2 steps forward, one step back. I was able to create the ISO/USB flash drive. I went to do the back up image, reformatted the USB HDD 3.0Tb in NTFS and the image process (via "Backup and Restore") stops as soon as it gets to the scanning part. I/O error. I tried different USB ports, same thing. Error 0x8007045D. Changed connecting cord, too. Backup and Restore does not work in Safe Mode. I also turned off MBAM, Win Defender and the Windows Firewall (a website suggested them). Also did a Check Disc and File System Check on the HDD. No joy.

Could it be my USB interface? Maybe the HDD itself? Any other ideas?

I would use something like Macrium Reflect Free to backup your data instead as the Windows backup utility can be unreliable at times.

Yes you will need to have it installed in order to restore an image.

Just pick exact copy so it copies everything on the drive and makes a full backup of all the data.

Ok. So, I have made the upgrade USB drive and when I opened the Media Creation Tool it asked if I wanted to upgrade it "now". Is one better or preferable than the other? Thanks

Thanks. I will do that on the coming weekend as I have no reason to expect this to go smoothly in any way, shape or form.

Incidentally, what is the easiest way to set up a daily c:/ image on a dedicated USB drive? Maybe a five day history or so where the new one would erase the oldest. Thanks. Simple is good. Thanks.
