I just purchased this hp win 11 computer an am trying to set it up. My problem is I can't drag and drop icons from the desktop to the taskbar and vice versa like I could in Win 10. I searched the taskbar settings and found no lock/unlock taskbar option. What simple tick is this senile old man missing this time? :)

Have you right clicked on it and told it to pin to task bar? That is how I do my Win 10 from day one.

Yeah that works for some icons but not others. Some has no option to pin to task bar. I am trying to drag/drop icons to the taskbar like I could in Win 10 but it seems it can't be unlocked. Also from task bar to desktop. Also I can't rearrange the icons on the task bar.

The taskbar may be locked. Right click on a blank space on it and unlock it.
Somethings can't be moved to the task bar if I am not mistaken. What won't move?

PeteC, that was a good read and I did learn some of what I was looking for. I bookmarked it for future reading.

MrBill, the only option I get when I right click the task bar is the task bar settings. I can't find any way to unlock it.

If you want to Pin an Icon of any App or Software from your Desktop to the Taskbar, RIGHT click on it.
A Menu opens, SCROLL to the bottom and click on SHOW MORE OPTIONS.
A new Menu opens and look for Pin to Task bar.

retiredlearner. That is good for apps and software icons on the taskbar but I want icons that cannot be pinned to be pinned to the taskbar. That's why I'm looking for a way to unlock the taskbar. Hopefully I will be able to drag/drop these icons to the taskbar like I was able to in Win 10.

Thanks SpywareDr, that page helped me do what I mostly wanted to. Do you know if I can pin a text document to the task bar? It will be easier to open the file from the taskbar than having to minimize my browser before I can open it.

    You're welcome.

Try this: Pin the app you want to open the .txt file to the task bar, then click it to open the app. Now drag and drop the .txt file towards the open app in the taskbar by hovering over its icon. This will bring their window to the foreground and the app can copy the content dragged by you. For example, you can drag an image from the desktop and drop it in the Outlook attachment screen by hovering over the Outlook icon in the taskbar.

Note that I can't test this right now because I'm currently running W10P64. Let me know if it works or not ...

Have you ever played around with adding TOOLBARS. Not sure with Win 11 still does this..

Right click on the Taskbar and select Toolbar-> NEW Toolbar
Attached is an example where I made one with my whole desktop. You can make them with just a single file or a folder file of files/shortcut.

SpywareDr, I tried everything several times to make sure I was doing it right. All I could get whenever I dragged an icon to the taskbar was a circle with a line thru it, such as no parking , no turn on red, etc.

SteveRJones I tried looking into the adding a toolbar but my only option when I right click the taskbar is 'taskbar settings'. There is not much as far as settings go. Well, for me anyway. But no 'new toolbar' option. Going back to Win10 with it's drag and drop feature has crossed my mind.

Hi DugE. Windows 11 is a huge step backwards in the Taskbar and Start Menu customization compared to Windows 10 and Windows 7. If you want the full functionality of dragging and dropping folders, applications and the ability to expand taskbar windows then install StartAllBack.
