I have an HP laptop this happened to a few times. Noticed the fan would run more often and at high speeds. Upper left hand side of computer seemed much hotter then usual. This was a few years ago. Think there was a heat sink mod for the mother board to improve heat transfer. A kit from E-Bay or Amazon was available. I didn't do the mod, a friend did it for me. Computer ran much cooler and no more shutdowns. I've since made that computer a Linux OS and runs cool as can be. In fact the fan almost never comes on at all anymore.

More info. Earlier, I had eliminated my little APS UPS as the cause. However, this recent failure may have been exacerbated by the UPS. In our current heat wave in L.A., our house voltage has been fluctuating. I keep a little plug-in voltmeter in permanent residence in my kitchen to monitor it and the other day when the computer shut down I noted the voltage was 106vac! True, the computer would not turn on until I replaced the PSU. But then it shutdown 2 or three more times (and easily rebooted) during the voltage drop. I took the UPS out of the system and that behavior has stopped. So, the UPS is definately suspect as well as the PSU.

Tuesday report.... All stable with new PSU and UPS disconnected except for the neighborhood's occasional heatwave-related low voltage issues (as low as 104VAC yesterday). Just left it off for most of the late afternoon yesterday. Was worst from 3pm to 6pm.

BTW FORDMAN, I will try to keep an eye on CPU temps today.

You know, I still have to fix my busted permission issues. I am considered Amin on my user ID but I have no (or limited) access now! Shortcuts no longer work, WU no longer works anymore. Any idea on how to fix?? Thanks!!

Should I start a new thread for this permissions problem? Seems like everyone has moved on. Thanks

Hi Larry, I've just read through your Thread again and I would suggest that you run sfc /scannow from cmd prompt as Admin to see if there is a problem with your Files due to the Power outs.

Interesting RL. Is there any way I can determine if that has already been installed? This appears to go back to spring of 2019 and I have gotten WU updates through 2021 at least, if not 2022 (usually Malicious Tool Remover). Thanks

I can't remember with W7, but should it not be in "update history"?

Installed Updates show that 2 of them were installed in 6/2022. I am going to mark this as Solved and open a permissions and WU recovery thread.

THANKS SO MUCH TO YOU GUYS! RT, TT,MB and EO!
