    Hello
I have created a backup folder on one computer on a peer-to-peer network. I have created subfolders for the different users on the network. How can I ensure that a given user can access only his/her assigned backup sub-folder? I cannot find an option for password protecting the folders. Computers are running on Widows 10.
    Thank You

I thought this would be simple but it does not seem to be as easy as I thought - not for individual folders with different accesses. It is easy to password protect an entire drive with encryption, but you don't want that.

One way to do what you want may be to use a file compression program like 7-Zip. This free program can be used to combine all the files in a folder into one password protected compressed file. Each user can create this compressed file on their own computers using their own password then copy that compressed file to their folder on your backup computer.

Anyone can still access and even see all the compressed files, but unless they know the password, they will not be able to see un-compress or see any of the files inside that compressed file.

Thank You Bill. Good proposal except some of the users would need a bit of training. Their IT skills are very basic.

In looking into this, I think some training will be required regardless your method. I will keep searching. Maybe someone else will come by with a better solution.

fkaramagi - PLEASE NOTE that it is NOT recommended that you share personal information within posts like you are doing via your signature.

Folder Protection - is easy.... When you make a folder called STEVE - you need to DENY Access to all other users. Then you make a folder called BILL and "Deny" access to all other users.

You do all of this via Windows Explorer - Properties - SECURITY Tab.

Another person has recommended 3rd party software. I am trying Lock-A-Folder and FolderGuard.

    Hello
I have tried Folder Guard. So far so good, it is offering pretty much what I want. There are many such tools with their pros and cons, and many reviews online, I thought this suited me best. More later as I go through my 30-day trial period. . .
