This is getting rather irritating now...

When I use Internet Explorer, I regularly get an error which closes the webpage and then advises me to restart my machine. I'm not 100% sure about this, but it seems to happen when a pop-up window is going to appear.

    My system:
    Internet Explorer: v 5.00.2614.3500
    Windows 98 Second Edition

Originally, I would restart the machine, but it didn't seem to matter, because whenever the error happens now I don't bother and I can normally reload the errant page and the error does not reappear.

Any ideas on what is causing this problem? Yesterday I deleted all my Temporary Internet Files (using the Tools>Internet Options>Delete Files... menu command).

The problem wasn't there when my PC was new.

BEFORE you go and intsall a different version of IE or do anything drastic, please post the entirety of the EXACT error message you are getting. The error window probably has a 'Details' button. View the details, copy and paste the details into a Notepad window and save it as a text file. You can do this before IE shuts down and the computer reboots. Post the error message here in this thread.

The following cleanup will clean the slate for any other things you do to repair this problem so do it first.

It will not change any settings etc.

A curupt swap file can cause something like this. Additionally the windows temp files need to be deleted.

To do this got to run and type

    cleanmgr /sageset:1

this will give a menu of items to clean up. Select all except compression.

    then run

    cleanmgr /sagerun:1

when this is completed do the below

Boot to DOS (not shutdown to DOS). While booting hit F8 to startup menu. Chose "command prompt only ".

    Type these commands

del c:\*.swp (may get file not found, is ok)
    del c:\windows\*.swp
    deltree c:\windows\shelli*.*
deltree c:\windows\temp\*.* (answer yes to all) "ALL "
    deltree c:\windows\tempor~1\*.*
    deltree c:\windows\history\*.*
    deltree c:\windows\spool\printers\*.*

    Reboot retest for problem.
