Word could not create the work file. check the temp environment variable

When I attempt to start Word I get the following message - 'Word could not create the work file. Check the temp environment variable.'. This problem only started in the last few months. I am not sure precisely when. I am not sure what changed for this to occur.

I have tried the following:-

1. Uninstall and reinstall Office.

2. Register word files with "winword.exe /r"

3. Set AppData to "%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming"

4. Create the folder INetCacheContract.Word.

5. Repair Office.

I am not sure whether I did 2. Register word files with "winword.exe/r", properly.

Can the Forum offer any help, please?

 

There doesn't seem to be a simple fix for this. Rather, there are several things to try. If the first does not work, move on to the next.

BTW, the proper syntax to register Word is winword.exe /r (note the space after exe and before the slash).
