I have an Acer Aspire E 15 laptop which is probably around 3 years old, I'd guess, so not terribly old. Last night it started having problems with charging the battery.

While I had it plugged in and charging, it basically stopped recognizing it was charging, it beeped and the screen dimmed, so I guess it went into battery saving mode.

I tried unplugging it/plugging it back in, shutting it down, restarting, but that didn't seem to help.

I have the charger plugged into a power strip so I plugged it in another open socket on the power strip and it started charging. I figured that was the problem, but shortly thereafter it beeped and the screen dimmed again, so I guess it went back into battery saving mode.

I fiddled with the charging cord a little bit and it seemed to be charging so I just left it alone to charge.

What's the best course of action here to get it back to charging with no issues?

I can buy a new charger and if that doesn't work I can try a new battery as well. The charger brick does run hot, but it's always ran hot since day one.

I found this to generate a report of my battery health:
    https://www.pcmag.com/how-to/how-to-check-your-laptops-battery-health-in-windows-10

And it seems like my battery, while degraded a bit from use, seems like it should still be fine. I've pasted the battery report html contents in a pastebin here: https://pastebin.com/bR2S6q5X (not sure where I could post a html file where it would be hosted and viewable in a browser)

What's the best way to troubleshoot this?

Have you plugged your charger directly into a wall socket to eliminate the power strip?
Is there any movement in the laptop charger connection?

I did a Google and found this:
How do you reset an Acer Aspire e15 battery?
    Unplug AC power adapter.
    1. Locate the battery reset pinhole on the bottom of the computer.
    2. Insert a small paperclip in the battery reset pinhole. Hold the reset button for 4 seconds.
    3. Let the computer sit for 5 minutes with no power.
    4. Connect the AC adapter and power on the system.

A huge problem with laptops is the charger jack attached to the mobo breaks. Sometimes the jack can be replaced - sometimes the whole mobo has to be replaced.

Your situation almost sounds like the cord on the charger is dying. "Fiddled" with that again...and or the jack where the cord is plugged in.

I did try plugging the charger directly into another wall socket (bypassing the power strip) and it was the same thing. I had to fiddle with the jack/cord to get it to start charging.

I just tried the battery reset and that might have done the trick. It's charging now on the start-up. I'll let it fully charge up then start using it for a while unplugged, then plug it back in to see if it starts charging back up.

I ordered another charger last night, it was $10 shipped so easy enough to give that a go. Hopefully that will come by the end of this coming week.

I hope it's not the motherboard or jack because honestly I would probably just buy a new laptop. I'd hate to essentially junk my current laptop, though. While it's not very powerful, it works fine for what I use it for so I'm hoping to get as many more years out of it as I have in it before it finally gives up the ghost.

Can sometimes be the powerbrick overheating, or the fuse going on the plug, could even be a dodgy battery. Take out the battery and see if it still turns on.

But have came across Acers where if you don't upgrade the BIOS then they lose some of their functionality.

Well, the battery reset didn't fix it, I'm still getting the same issue. Will wait for my new charger to arrive to test that.

Does anyone see anything wrong with my battery health report? It's here in a pastebin as a html file https://pastebin.com/bR2S6q5X

Doesn't look like I can upload a html file here, but I've uploaded it as a pdf.

I've had my new charger for two days now and it seems like that was the problem. I've give it a couple more days of charging/discharging and come back towards the end of this week and mark this as solved if I'm not having any problems charging with the new charger.

I'm going to call this solved. The problem looks to have been the old charger. I've gone almost a week now with a new charger, going through several charges/discharges and it all seems to be working now.
