Windows 10 has been telling me to update for the past few nights. Each night I clicked update and shutdown. Later when I returned to my computer, it was in sleep mode, not shut down. Tonight, I decided to update and restart and watch it. A sign said "We couldn't complete the update. Undoing changes." It then attempted to automatically do it again and had the same result. I wonder if I accidentally removed some of the files with CCleaner, and now the program isn't complete, so can't run completely. What do you recommend I do?

    Have you tried Windows Troubleshoot?
Start > Settings > Update and Security > Troubleshoot > Additional Troubleshoot.

I have seen this several times, and it eventually worked itself out on all but one machine - and that machine was in the Windows Insider program, but had been turned off, thus not updated for a couple months. A full restore was eventually required.

It is highly unlikely this had anything to do with CCleaner. I have used that 1000s of times on 100s of system and never had it break one. And that is because it only cleans out temporary files, not system files.

Running Troubleshoot gives me "Found Pending Restart." I restarted it and ended up with the same problem. Now, when I go into Update, it offers a code 0x80040922, if that helps.

Did you Google that new error code and see all the hits?

Turning off Windows Defender firewall fixed the problem. Thanks.

Ummm, no! That did NOT "fix" the problem. It covered it up and exposed your computer to much greater risks! I recommend you enable WF again and see if the problem returns. If it does, then further troubleshooting is required.

I turned it back on immediately after the update installed. I do find it odd that Windows would provide an update that required a Windows firewall to be disabled, but that was the only thing listed that seemed to relate, and it did actually work. I won't know if the problem returns until the next Windows update. If you know of another way to test it, please let me know.

I ran Malwarebytes and RogueKiller, and neither found anything from when the firewall was off.

Barry, FWIW I have experienced a similar event and I Restarted the comp about 3 times and it sorted itself out.
Like Bill said, if it's a legitimate MS Update, there will never be a need to turn off Windows Defender.;)

Maybe it was just the 9th restart was the charm and had nothing to do with Windows Defender. It's hard to learn when cause and effect isn't clear. Then we end up just guessing and hoping for the best or making assumptions. I haven't had this happen before. If it happens again, I'll just let the computer keep restarting till something changes.

I guess it didn't work, as my computer attempted to update again. I attempted to return to this site and say that, but I couldn't connect to this site using any of my browsers, though I could connect to everything else.

[Windows 10 has been telling me to update for the past few nights. Each night I clicked update and shutdown. Later when I returned to my computer, it was in sleep mode, not shut down.]

Where does this Update notification appear?
I see this when I click START > Power > and the message appears when I hover over SHUT DOWN --- correct?
In the morning, I usually have to do a RESTART immediately after Booting the computer.
A RESTART seems to be the mechanism to complete the Update.

Mine is just the opposite. At night it tells me to update, and in the morning, it just shows normal sleep, shutdown and restart.

It doesn't. Never has. Something else was going on in your case.

When you consider there are over 1 billion W10 systems out there, and each one became unique within the first few minutes of its first boot as users set up their networks, user accounts, personalizations, and installed programs. And those computers are made up of parts from 100s of different manufacturers, all [hopefully] complying to the same ATX Form Factor industry standards. Frankly, I think it amazing Windows Update consistently works so well for so many.

Rather than deal with this on a daily basis, I delayed Windows Update for 30 days. Hopefully, the next update will fix whatever the problem is.

I set my computer to delay Windows Update for a month, so today it told me it is time to update. I went through the update procedure twice, and both times failed. Any suggestions on how I can find whatever is getting in the way?
