Whenver i go to run SFC it starts, then i get a message sayin
"Files that are required for windows to run properly must be copied to the DLL Cache. Insert your Windows XP Pro SP1 CD Now." The options are retry, more info and cancel. When i placed the cd in the drive and press retry i get the same message over and over and over again. The message even repeats itslef whwn i try cancel. The only way to stop it is to Ctrl-Alt-Del to end the process. Any suggestions??

Have you tried running SFC from a command prompt?

    Open a command prompt window

Type CD C:\ and press the enter key.

At the C:\ prompt type SFC and press the enter key. This will give you a list of commands related to SFC.

Then type SFC /revert and press the enter key.

Close the command window and try running SFC from the run window again to see if the problem was rectified.

    Disregard my previous post, I am able to replicate your problem, even after following my own advice. But I believe I have found a solution, at least it works in my system, so thought you might want to give it a try;

Insert your Windows XP disk into the disk drive and wait for it to autoload. After it has autoloaded exit the program and then run SFC /SCANNOW from the Run window.

    KenKeith,

I am not totally sure I understand you. Do you want me to run System Restore and see what happens?

    Hi slk230mb,

The dllcache folder in question should contain the correct version of the files for your system, if not then it must be reinstalled with copies from the XP reinstallation CD or another method.

Or possibly, if the cache folder has been purged or there are files missing, I am thinking the folder files should exist in a prior time accessed by S/R.

The Windows Protection feature on XP scans on a daily basis (when up) and monitors the system files to maintain an appropriate file installation and it prevents overwriting of the correct file for the system. It appears you are attempting to do the identical procedure with SFC at the cmd prompt, and it fails! It may be possible for the SF Protection feature to function with the problems you experience at the command prompt, but I have some reservation in believing that is possible.

The message "Files that are required for windows to run properly must be copied to the DLL Cache " indicates windows is not running properly. Other than not being able to initiate the SFC function at the cmd line, what is not running properly?

You may be able to get additional information regarding the problem by going to the event viewer and clicking on system.

What do you mean by "it wont let me access the data on it "? Is there a message that you could share? What exactly happens?

There is no error message. When i go into Device Manager it is there. When i right click on My Computer and choose 'Manage' it is there, it just doesn;t have a drive letter. Right-clicking on it here won't let me assign it one.

There are no jumpers, b/c its set as Primary Slave. Its Fat32 and 13gigs. I had it setup this way before the re-install and it worked fine. Maybe there is a setting I am overlooking?

    More questions............

Any services changed, like Logical Disk Manager, Plug and Play, or or RPC?
Does context menu give any properties?

Slave drives usually have jumpers. Also, some primary drives use a different jumper if there is a slave on the same channel than they do if they are the only drive on the channel. I'd triple-check them.

Not sure where you want me to find the context menu.

I edited my last post, adding the stuff about jumpers. There almost certainly should be one on the slave designating it as such.

Going back to the original post the problem message indicates there is a file missing (flawed link and can't be found is probably more accurate) and the attempt to install SP1 fails. Reviewing SP1 installation directions warns anti-virus may interfere and should be disabled! That and/or another reason may be the source of the problem.

The only resolution for the missing file problem is to reinstall a missing file from the restoratiion CD...or restore system to a prior state. However, a complete reinstall of the O/S may be the best solution depending on the circumstances.

Autocomplete does have a role in SP1 as it relates to Exployer 5 and 6. It is a feature that suggests possible matches for entries typed in the address bar. SP1 provides a modification for security reasons. Autocomplete routine is also used in Word app and other sections of the software.
