About three months ago I bought my wife a sparkling new laptop. The first thing I did was to download and install the latest Windows Updates. All went well.

However, in the early hours of today I decided to download and install the latest Windows updates. After going through that procedure it I told me that my version of Windows had reached its end of service. I tried to upload and install the latest updates again but just got the same response.

Does this mean that the version of Windows which came with the new laptop was almost out of date when I bought it and that I have to now pay for the latest version? Thank you. Windows Update Failure.jpg

As far as I know and understand, Win 10 has no expiration date. It is like the Energizer Bunny and just keeps going and going till M$ has another brilliant idea. What are you using for an Anti Virus? If it is something different than Windows Defender, shut it off and try again.

Hi Lugwalker, If you Start > Settings > System > About > Windows Specifications it will tell us what Version and Build is installed on the laptop.
Don't try and install the 20H2 update until WU has installed any of the necessary Patches/Updates the existing OS needs.

Thanks, Guys. Before deciding to turn off my Avast antivirus I decided to give the updating a final try.

I noticed that the downloading of the update was extremely slow and eventually the installation commenced. That was slower still. It took at least eight hours to complete the full procedure! The good news is that everything worked out perfectly in the end. I've never had this problem before on my other machines, but maybe in this instance it had something to do with the fact that it was a new laptop.

It probably would have installed quicker without the interference from Avast!
During an install of Windows updates - it is always a good idea to Disable any 3rd party AV as Defender will operate all the protection required during this time.
You can enable your 3rd party AV after the install has completed.
