When transferring files from my C: drive which is an SSD to an external portable drive using Usb 3.0 the best speed i can get is about 25Mbs/sec is this normal as i would have expected a much higher figure

    • In theory, USB 3.0 can do 650 MB/sec. But that's just theory. Real world speeds vary, average is 25-100 MB/sec.

    Couple of thoughts/questions ...

Is the external HD USB 3? If not transfer rate will be that of USB 2 even if plugged into USB 3

What disk speed is the external HD - 7200 rpm faster than 5400 rpm.

The external drive is a USB3 drive plugged into a USB3 outlet on my pc the external drive is a Seagate 4TB drive model SRD00F1 it spins at 5400rpm and should have a transfer rate of 150Mbs

A little Googling suggests that the drive inside the SRD00F1 is a Seagate/Samsung Momentus ST4000LM016 with a disk speed of 5400rpm - details here. This may go part way to explaining the slow transfer speed.

Formatting a drive removes / kills ALL files on the drive and turns it into a virgin.

Copy the files off the drive to your comp, format the drive as ntfs, copy files back.
