Hi, This question has probably been covered somewhere but I wouldn't know where to find it. I know very little about networking so here goes. Room1 has a TV box connected to the coax, room2 has a TV box and a combo modem router connected, room3 has nothing connected. All 3 rooms are connected via a 3 way splitter. Now in room3 can I connect a modem and router to the coax and connect to PC with an Ethernet cable? Do I need a router for this or is a modem enough? If I can how? Thanks.

All you need is a network cable from the existing modem-router in room 2 going to room 3 computer. 1 modem-router is enough for your entire home.

Thank you for the reply TonyT. That brings me back to my original question "Now in room3 can I connect a modem and router to the coax and connect to PC with an Ethernet cable? " Can I create a separate network, if that is what you would call it, that way? Like having two separate independent networks in my home.

Yes it can be done. But the big question is WHY do you want to do this?

Yes. But you will have to pay for a second Internet account from your cable provider.
By just using a cat 5 from the existing router you will be able to share the single Internet connection in room 3. You can set security on the room 3 computer so it is isolated from other computers on the same network, e.g set the room 3 computer network name to something unique and different such as "room3", do not use file and printer sharing, etc.

Could you not use a wireless dongle to do this and not run cable? That is if he has a USB port available?

Yes he could, if the modem/router is wifi and room 3 is within range.
