I am having trouble helping out a friend with a fresh 98 se install.
    There is a 56 k fax modem
Using the standard hardware install in the control panel I have tried the three different types of modems
The modem is connected to a live phone line
The Win 98 disc is in the e-drive which is the cd rom drive
Have had no luck with the modem finding a dial tone
Any ideas ? What am I doing wrong ????

    Hi S

Pls post the error message(s) you get. Is it the same for the three drivers?

Seems to me that either the modem is not connected up to the PC correctly, or the in-house telephone cable is belly-up.
If you connect an ordinary telephone to the socket where the modem is connected, do you get a dial tone ?
    regards

Are you insalling the modem through AUTODETECTION at boot up? I've found that WinModems want to be autodetected at bootup. If you miss the autodetection, you have to shutdown, move the slot, reboot, and let autodetection do its thing.

If this is indeed an Internal Modem then you have a very common problem.

Many Internal Modems once they are setup in one OS will not re-setup in another. Even when going to a fresh install of the same OS.They become what I believe is called Hard Coded and refuse to change. They also have been know to cause problems for Audio card setups and/or Network cards.

It is a hardware ( modem ) problem and not the OS.

Sometimes you can go to the Device Manager ( in safe mode ) and remove the Modem(s). shut the machine down and physically remove the Modem. Restart Window a couple of times without it. Shut down and put the modem back into a different slot. Restart Windows and PRAY. If you are lucky it will get installed Propely.

If not then run a permanent fix. Go get an External, put it on an external serial port and 98% of the time forget Modem problems.

An External is not only more reliable but takes some load off of the CPU also as they are a full blown Modem and not half of one.

I just re-read the original post and saw this which is not unusual either.

If all modems are not removed form the Device manager ( again, best done from the safe mode ) and the machine not restarted without one, the new one may not be picked up properly.

Just to add a bit, boot to safe mode to remove the modem(s) as BillyBob has suggested, and while there, remove all com ports as well.

It sound like your not using the correct drivers.
Please post what type of modem it is Exactly. We can find the driver for you or help you find it.
As suggested Make sure the modem is removed from the device manager before installing.

Something that may have been forgotten here.

You may have to go to the C:\Windows\inf\other folder and delete any .INF files that refer to Modems.

If there are any there Windows may try to use them.

Billy Bob is quite right regarding internal Modems I had no end of problems, one that Billy Bob mentions interfering with sound i had that, fixed it by trying different PCI slots, but in the end I turfed it as I had too many drop outs connected a external Modem and never looked back since.
