I recently reinstalled Outlook (full version) because of a problem, but now IT opens up whenever I click on a MAILTO link instead of Outlook Express. HOW do I get MAILTOs to use Outlook Express as the default instead?

You've tried going to tools....internet options.......then looking under the programs tab to see if you've got Outlook Express set as your default email? Click apply....then Ok?

hmm.. now this is odd.. there is NO 'Outlook Express' in the drop down box for 'Email' in the 'Programs' tab!
It only has 'Microsoft Outlook' there now. How do I get OE back?

    thx,

That'll explain why it defaults to Outlook! :D
Go to your control panel......to add/remove programs. Do you have Outlook Express listed?

Yes, Outlook Express is there (v6). Why did the Outlook Express option in the drop down disappear? How can I get it back?

    thx,

In Outlook Express, in the menu I found a place to set the default mailer:

'Tools'; 'Options'; 'General'; 'Default Messaging Programs' box:

I clicked the MAKE DEFAULT button to make OE the default, BUT when I go back to IE and choose:

'Tools'; 'Internet Options'; 'Programs'; 'Email' box

then the EMAIL box has a BLANK line in it and mailtos don't work. It loooks as if Outlook Express cannot truly be made the default mail handler (doesn't exist in the drop box).

Do I have to reinstall IE/OE again to get it back?

    thx,

I tried reinstalling IE/OE 6 but it didn't help. I still don't have an Outlook Express in the drop down box/list to choose from <sigh>. Any ideas?

    thx,

    Hi Mike
    Try this:
Close OE, click Start/Run and enter this command line, complete with quotes, spaces and the /reg switch:

    "C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /reg

Adapt the path if you've installed OE elsewhere.

Excellent! That did the trick (added Outlook Express back to the drop down list). You Shmart!

    Thx,

The solution is a combination of 2 posts I had from a while back: /reg-ing the program, AND choosing OE from the Programs TAB list (except that this time OE was gone from the list!)

Funny how history repeats itself, gets all tangled up and produces a mutated bug down the line! :D
