So my home desktop unit has developed an issue with File Explorer.

It loads to display Quick Access, with the various trees displayed underneath.

If I scroll down and highlight/select any folder and right click, FE momentarily freezes, then crashes. As it crashes I get a brief blue screen. Then the screens come back and FE will immediately reopen.

Last evening I Googled the issue and found a discussion at Microsoft community that suggested running sfc /scannow. I did that and the report said it found corrupted files and repaired them.

    But, the problem remains.

So what's up with my File Explorer, and what can I do to repair it?

    Thanks in advance,
    Rick

    The unit specs: Windows 10 Pro 64-bit, Intel Core i5 2400 @ 3.10Ghz. 16.0GB RAM Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 665Mhz (9-9-9-24), Motherboard Lenovo, Monitors ASUS VH238 (1920x1080@60Hz) x 2, Graphics card 2047MB NVIDIA GeForce GT 610 (PNY)

Are Graphics drivers up to date?
    From NVIDIA?

Did you use the Troubleshooter in W10?
Settings > Update and Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooting ?

Thanks for the feedback. I'll check the drivers and run the troubleshooter.

So overnight it has magically begun working properly again. I still don't know what caused the glitch, or what cleared it up. But given that it is working I'll take it.

I did check and the NVIDIA drivers are up to date, but I've not run the troubleshooter. Thanks again for the feedback. If it acts up again I'll start with the troubleshooter option.

Best Thanksgiving wishes to you and yours!

    Rick

    @retiredlearner the issue is back.

There did not appear to be a general purpose troubleshooter, and I did not see one specific to File Explorer, so after browsing through the options, so I ran the File Search troubleshooter. Upon finish it gave a message that indicated it fixed an issue, but that did not resolve the matter with FE crashing when I do a right click (to say, for example, look at the properties on the C drive).

    Thoughts?

This is from way back when-> delete the IconCache.db file from your profile directory (usually /Documents and Settings/Username/Local Settings/Application Data)

    It will automatically get recreated.

Okay... I did a search and found files named iconcache_16, and iconcache_32, AND iconcache_48.

    Delete all three?

Roger that, thanks. I found and deleted the file and rebooted last evening.

    The problem persists.

When I load File Explorer and browse to any folder, highlight it, and right click, File Explorer momentarily freezes and then crashes. The task bar disappears, the screen blinks, and then it all comes back.

    2. Use ShellExView to Manage Context Menu Handlers

If a Clean Boot didn’t help, then your problem is definitely caused by a bad context menu handler. And below, you’ll find the best and fastest way to handle your bad context menu handlers.

Hi Rick. Did running ShellExView resolve File Explorer crashing? I would also update your Windows 10 build to 20H2 as a later build can resolve issues if you are using an earlier version of Windows 10.

My apologies, men, for being so long getting back to this. My real world job puts me on the edge of other people's crises on a daily basis, and I work on a 24/7 on call basis. Of late (and for a plethora of causes), my discretionary time has been minimal for the pursuit of enthusiast things such as computing.

Now, to the topic and to Evan's question: I think, as in, maybe but not quite certain, that I found the source of the issue. I disabled the item for a program that is no longer on the computer and the issue went away. At the moment I can highlight the drive letter and right-click for Properties, and I get the properties instead of a crash.

That noted, I'll watch it through the day to see if it shows up again.

However, installing and running ShellExView and dealing with this leads me to two additional questions.

First, having disabled the item using ShellExView, will it remain disabled?

And next, "How do I clean up the Registry to deal with these entries?"

ShellExView has a delete option, but past experience has taught me that when dealing with such items, it is better to ask beforehand than it is to exclaim "Oops!" after the fact.

Thanks as always for the advice and insight!
