    Hi guys

Long time away now bring a brand new problem.
I have a working Excel file in folders in win10 latest version. If this file is opened by double click on file in Win Explorer, it can be opened but no saving. It does not say it is read only.
If same file is open via Excel 2007 sp3,changes be saved.
Security rights is full for the user.

Any path to explore to find out why, never seen this before.

Do you see a big YELLOW bar that says "Protected View" with a button that says Enable Editing?

Copy one of the files to the desktop and see if you can open it from Win Explorer.

When you say Win Explorer, what exactly do you mean? In Windows 10, when you click on a Desktop icon, that is using "File Explorer". Are you trying to open this file using a shortcut to the spreadsheet file? Or are you clicking on the actual spreadsheet (.xls) file?

I note that Excel 2007 is not [officially] supported by Windows 10. Did it used to work and suddenly stop? Have you set .xls file association to Excel 2007?

By win Explorer i mean click on Pc icon to access files in hard disk to run it.
No problem access as a shortcut on desktop
Doc file no such phenomena, only Excel 07 has problem
I have no problem on on pc with the same environment
Remember: Excel file is not a problem if open with an opened Excel, using its file open menu option

That's what I thought but was just making sure. That is now called File Explorer in Windows 10.

So you can open and view Excel 2007 spreadsheets with no problems. You just cannot save the spreadsheet after making any changes to it? Can you create new spreadsheets and save them?

It has been so long since I used any Office 2007 programs, I really don't have much to offer. You really should consider updating to 2019, or perhaps the free, and very capable open source LibreOffice alternative.

In the meantime, you might check out this: https://www.energylens.com/support/repair-excel

    Final solution Posting
Just found that if the Excel file is opened with Excel and then saved, this newly saved Excel file can be opened via File Manager. So conclusion, the Excel file is slightly faulty that File Manager can't open it properly as an Excel file.

I'm not convinced "faulty" is the correct term here. Faulty would suggestion file corruption. I think it has more to do with file associations in Windows and/or a compatibility issue. Excel 2007 saved Excel spreadsheets using the .3 file format. For example, the filename would be something like spreadsheet.xls.

Recent versions of Excel use use .4 format so the filename would be spreadsheet.xlsx.

Recent versions of Excel also support many different spreadsheet functions such as different formula or cell format options that may affect compatibility.

It is the same with recent versions of Word. Old Word documents would be filename.doc. Recent Word documents would be filename.docx.

Is it possible your files were, at some point, viewed with a newer version of Excel that may have converted the spreadsheets for compatibility with the newer versions of Excel?

Bill I can't define the exact content in the file to manifest this so I say it is 'faulty'. Moreover it happen to both xls & xlsx

Well, I can't explain the exact problem so I guess faulty is as good as incompatible or incorrect. At any rate, I am glad you are able to access the file.
