I looked at my windows update in the settings this morning, and saw this in the dialog. First time.
    Update Error.png

    Any solutions?

FWIW I did click on Retry, but got the same error message.

I also ran the Windows 10 update troubleshooter, but it didn't find anything.

Strange. I had just the same issue a couple of days ago.

The solution is easy, thank goodness.

    Visit https://www.kapilarya.com/fix-we-co...l-because-an-update-service-was-shutting-down

for all details and other solutions but the short answer is:

    1. Press WinKey+ R and type services.msc in the Run dialog box, hit Enter key to open Services snap-in.

    2. In Services snap-in window, locate the Windows Update service. You might spot it to set to Manual Startup Type. Double click on this service to modify its status.

    3. On the service property sheet, change the Startup type to Automatic and click Apply, followed by OK.

    Worked fine for me!

I restarted after doing what you suggested, and that appears to have fixed it. I am currently downloading an update from MS. Thanks.
