Did my hard drive go south?
"Setup Detection Message ", message SU0013. " setup cannot create files on your startup drive & cannot setup WIN98. If you have HPFS or NTFS you must create a MS-DOS boot partition. If you have LANtastic server or SuperStore compression, disable it before running setup. "
For this "wannabe ", that's scary stuff.
Here's how it all started. The other day when i turned my PC on, rite after the 1st boot screen, a warning popped up stating that " You do not have an operating system." Well, i finally got it to boot into Win98fe so i franticly started moving my valuables over to my D" drive. Hdd not a partiton on the the other Hdd. Got that done, but i'm wondering if there is any corruption that tagged along with each of those things i moved over to D:.
Anyway, I got out the boot disks & went work.
I tried "fdisk" maybe 5 or 6 times & gave up & tried my "Maxblast" utility that came with "that" hard drive & after several tries, i gave up. That's why i'm here because i kept getting the above message & that was including trying to load Win98fe that was on the PC as well as the new copy of Win98se that i was going to install in the near future.
Personally, i think the HDD went south & this comlicates matters because i need a AWARD BIOS upgrade on this machine so i can upgrade the CPU, RAM & HDD. I can still boot into the BIOS but i'm getting very rude treatment from the AWARD BIOS people & therefor don't wish to deal with them any more. I'm open to suggestions/opinions & snide remarks. Thanks Y'all. TUBA4

That error most commonly comes up when you try to install Win95 (original edition) on a FAT32 formatted drive but there are several other times as well.

For the full list, look here.

    Good luck. :)

It doesn't make any difference anymore what SU0013 is.
After dl'ing a few tools from the Maxtor website & running them on my C:\ (primary Master), they certified the integrity of my HDD. So the hdd itself is not part of the problem.
I stil can't load win98fe or win98se which i believe is due to something on my hdd caused by "MAXBLAST" which is the MAXTOR crutch for a larger hdd when ones bios doesn't support it.
1 of tools from Maxtor was supposed to remove all that stuff but i don't think it did because i still can't load my "OS ". So now i'm trying to upgrade my bios so i don't have to use Maxblast or any other brand's version in the future. In fact i will probably put in a larger hdd once i get passed the bios gupgrade. Thanx Y'all, TUBA4

If you have another machine (and you can post to this board so I guess thats a yes), pull your HDD out of the problem machine, jumper it as a slave, plug it into another machine with a working OS and FDISK your drive (drive 2). Pull it out of the machine, rejumper it and put it back in yours , FDISK the MBR and FDISK the drive again, setting the partition to active. Format the drive and do your install. Poof - all your MaxBlast **** is gone and you have a good working drive.

    ;)

It's been a while since I've run into this error so perhaps I'm not remembering correctly but I believe it was caused by not allowing the drive overlay to load before booting from the a: drive. If your bios doesn't support the drive you have to install the ez-bios program that comes with the maxblast software and let it control the drive or you're going to have problems like this. The only way around this is to find a bios upgrade that will support the drive. When you had the maxblast software installed before did you wait for the drive overlay to load before booting from the floppy? If not, this is probably your problem. It will certainly cause some sort of problem if you uninstalled it and your bios doesn't support the drive. With the software installed, you have to boot from the hard drive and watch the screen. It will stop briefly at a screen that says something like press ctrl to view drive info, press a to boot from your a: drive. At this screen choose boot from floppy disk, put a disk in and then type whatever key it says to continue and after it boots then try running fdisk (or windows setup; whatever). Sorry I can't be exact here but it's been a while since I've had anything to do with it. Bottom line is, you have to let the overlay load before booting from the floppy. You can't just put the floppy in and start the computer. If you decide to contact somebody about this I think you probably need to get in touch with Maxtor. There's really not much the people at Award can do other than maybe point you to a place to get a bios upgrade (if this is indeed what's happening). Depending on how old the computer is, there may not be one available.
