I've not yet installed version 2004. It's now september and I'll likely skip it and go directly for the next version ... ... after some hesitation though ... ... !

My laptop's (v2004) optimization setting location is slightly different than Retired Learner's so I'll describe it for anybody who might be confused (and to settle my OCD about details)...

Settings > System > Storage > Optimize Drives > Scheduled optimization > Change settings

If you have only one drive (C: and it is a SSD), then you simply UNcheck "Run on a schedule (recommended)" > OK

If you have mixed SSD and HDD configuration, then click further down at Drives > "Choose" button and UNcheck the the appropriate (SSD) drive(s).

BTW, glad to see my account here is still live. :)

Here is what my Optimize Drives shows:
    upload_2020-8-29_9-16-10.png

It appears that mine has never run. However, the "Scheduled optimization" is "On" and reflects a weekly optimization and all the drives - SSD, HHD, and two external HDs are checked. Is there some way I can check to see if any optimization has been run? If it hasn't, should I manually run the optimization. This unit is about 3 years old.

    Hi Robert.

If you are using Windows 10 2004 just turn the optimization schedule off for your SSD on the C drive and run the optimization manually once a month and that will solve the issue until Microsoft makes a patch that fixes the bug.

Some may not like what I have to say a or may disagree. So be it.
For the above reason (update) I set windows update 100% disabled on all my win10 computers. The vast majority of updates are unnecessary, even the security updates. Most of the possible exploits involve direct physical access to your computer. Some updates ARE important. If I choose to install them I can get them when necessary, though haven't had to yet. My desktop runs version 1903 and laptop runs 2004 (recently installed). No problems ever on either.

Thanks to all for the inputs. I have turned my weekly optimization schedule off and have set reminders to do it manually once a month. Not a big deal. Years ago I sort of enjoyed watching the defrag operate so maybe I will have some new entertainment.
Tony you make some excellent points and I would like like to handle all my updates manually. However, I'm sure I don't have the knowledge to analyze an update and know with any confidence that I need or don't need it. Is there any kind of a guide available for someone like me - or is that something that someone develops along with becoming a Microsoft MVP?

I do not recommend to others to disable updates. My reply was more of a "rant" because I all to often see broken systems by updates. You have a setup and method of operation that works for you, thus it's not broke, so don't fix it!
