After a while my computer mouse (and computer) will move and then not move and then move and then not move. After restarting all is well for a while. Picture just tryiing to move your mouse to click on the start menu and its position is in the upper right hand corner. Upon moving the mouse down towards the start button in the lower left corner my mouse will stop and then continue on then stop and so on. If I move the mouse around while it is stopped the mouse will (upon moving again) place itself to my last position my hand has moved the mouse. I then try to get closer to the start button and it's just incrementally moved. My comuter sounds like its doing the same thing- starting and stopping. What gives??

What kind of mouse are you using? If it has a tracking ball taking it out and cleaning it might help. If your whole system is slowing though this probably is not the case. What programs are running at startup? If this only happens after the computer has been on for a while then check to see what's running then. Press ctrl-alt-del. and look at whats listed in the window.
You might want to do a scandisk and defrag to clean things up.
Also try using spybot to get rid of any nasty predators running in the background.
If the problem is mouse related, try using another mouse and see if the problem persists. I have a logitech cordless mouse and I know when my batteries start to get low all sorts of strange things start happenning.

You can check your mouse settings by going into the control panel and double clicking the mouse icon. It lets you adjust sensitivity, etc.

    Hope this helps

How long has it been since you've cleaned the processor fan and heat sink. Dust in those items will make a computer run very schitzy!

    starts stops...

I have defragged and used scan disk, disk doctor and the other Dr. watson I presume; and every thing says its fine/. I ll try to check out which program this event occurs with but I think it's any. As for the mouse, it ain't th mouse. Will check the fan this weekend.
I just got my computer to defrag, it use to stop and restart on me and tell me the disk was being written to. I think it was virus' but it seems to work now.
Will try that spy thingy but how do I get it??
Thanks for the advice guys. Appreciate it much.

    I have the same problem

Running 98-SE on 4 machines and only the new system is doing the run-stop-run-stop. Using DrHardware, the cpu useage bounces from about 5 to 25, back down and up twice, stays low for about 1 sec then starts all over again. When I jiggle the mouse on the pad, the cpu useage GOES DOWN to almost 0. As soon as I stop moving the mouse, the sequence starts up again. Then usually it starts at 25 to 50, with the same pattern. Moving the mouse brings it back to about 3. Stop moving the mouse, and it goes back up again with the same pattern. This time it goes 50-75%.

A restart of the system stops this for about 4-8 hours then starts all over again.

Is there any program that will monitor which module is using the cpu to try and find this #$%@ problem?

    similar fault in 2k

Guys, I had a similar problem where the cpu usage was going way up and the hard disk constantly working.
There was no issue with the mouse however but same thing when it came to be running for longer than 6 hours.
I found ad-aware got rid of all the spyware and win washer cleared out megs of rubblish. I had fought with it for ages before this and these two progs cured the pc. I am fairly sure it was to do with virtual memory as there was so much 'history' being kept by windows......good luck!
