I have my friend's Dell Inspiron One 2320 due to her husband passing away and now she wants to learn to use it.
When I press the power button to turn it on, the Dell logo comes on and I believe Windows loads because I even hear the windows sound. But what comes on are just re-occurring colors filling the screen, such as, orange, green, blue, grey, black and keeps repeating the colors.
I played around with the keyboard and I noticed the "sleep" key was pushed down more than all the other keys. So I pressed on it and the screen went black, then I pressed it again and the windows screen showing a beautiful landscape. Then I hit the enter key and windows came up.
I was wondering how to boot up just in windows and not have to go through the sleep mode. Could it be the keyboard?
Please help me figure this out. Thank you.
    Jeanne

Did you reboot it again to see what happens?

Yes I have had the computer for a few days and every time I turn it on, I hear the windows sound but then the various colors show and that is all it does. Just now when I hold down the sleep button on the keyboard, windows comes up. Very interesting.

If you have access to another keyboard I would try that - if no change then the keyboard is not at fault'

I did try another keyboard and the colors came up again. I pressed some of the keys but nothing happened. Also there was no "Sleep" button on the keyboard. I really think the problem is the sleep key. None of the keyboards I have, have a sleep button. Is there anyway to disengage the sleep button so it never goes to sleep?

There is no sleep key on my MS keyboard, but it looks like the sleep button can be effectively disabled as outlined here

    Windows 8 and Windows 10
    1. Open the Control Panel.
    2. In the Control Panel, click Power Options.
    3. In the Power Options window, click the Choose what the power buttons do link in the left navigation pane.
    4. Click the drop-down list for When I press the power button and When I press the sleep button options and select the action to be performed.

I did exactly what you suggested, control panel, power options, etc. I pressed do nothing when I press the sleep button. Now I can't get past the various colored windows by tapping the "sleep" key. I wonder what can be done next.

Hi Jeanne, Is this Dell 2320 an All in One or a Desktop with Monitor?
Do you know what Intel CPU is in it, i3 i5 or i7?
What version of W10 is it running?
Has it got all the current updates installed?

Sorry to hear that the suggestion to disable the sleep key has led to more issues - with hindsight may be not a good idea :(

In addition to RL's post do you know if the PC was supplied with Windows 10 and are there any restore disks? I'm not familiar with Dell - or any branded PC as I have built my own computers for the past 30 years.

Yes the Dell 2320 is an All in One
    Processor Information: Intel (R) Pentium (R) CPU G630 @ 2.70GHZ
I Do not know for sure what Intel CPU is in it, i3 i5 or i7? I can't find it when I go into the F2 or F12 setup.
I updated the windows when I first was able to get on so I'm assuming it is the latest version of W10.
I think it has all the current updates installed. I was doing that when I was able to get Windows.
I have sent an email to my neighbor asking her if she can find any CDs or information on the computer. I know they bought it from a lawyer before they moved here. I'll keep playing with it. Thanks for all the help.

You may need the drivers from Dell for the Graphics as I fear that as the Warranty expired in 2013 the drivers may not be approved by MS.
Are there any exclamation points in Device Manager?

The solution to this issue is far from straightforward as there is no access to the OS (assuming that it does boot up) to look at drivers, etc or to initiate a recovery.. The PC was originally supplied with Windows 7 and later upgraded to Windows 10, but we have no idea how this was achieved - via media or online and if via media that is available.

Without access to the PC it is not possible to directly back up any important data although it would be possible by other means. i.e. remove the hard drive and view/copy the data on another PC.

Without an active screen reinstalling Windows 10 is unlikely to be feasible even if you create installation media on another computer as outlined here

In order for this reinstallation to be initiated the Dell must be set up to boot from USB drive/DVD at the top of the boot order. There is no guarantee that this would work and clearly at your own risk.

A final thought - worth trying another keyboard without a sleep button - a very long shot!

I cannot even get into Control Panel to see if there are any exclamation marks. All I ever get are the various colors. When I turn it on I can tap F2 or F12 but I have been through those and nothing I do helps. I just get the various colors and then I hear the Window Sound load but it is in the background and all I see is the colors.
I did try changing the keyboard with no sleep and it was just the same thing.
Do you think if I took it to the computer shop they would be able to figure it out. My neighbor said she had no disks with it. Should I try to talk to Dell? Any advise would be appreciated. Thank you.

I can't imagine that Dell would be of much help - I would talk with your local computer shop.

Pete C is it possible that the Boot up is corrupted?
    https://www.groovypost.com/howto/create-windows-10-bootable-usb-flash-drive/
Jeanne, would you be able to follow this procedure?
Have you tried getting into Safe Mode?

I would not think so as the computer was originally responding to the sleep key, that is until it was disabled. I have no idea if the power options would come into force until the computer has booted up, but would think it unlikely.

As long as the monitor works, it should be possible to try a startup repair via installation media created on another computer. I googled and found the tutorial below. You need to get the computer to boot from the USB-drive and if it boots successfully, try the startup repair.

Repair Windows 10 using USB drive

If that doesn't work, upgrade to the version (2004) on the USB-stick and choose to keep personal programs and files. I'm not sure if this will leave the "Dell-Stuff" alone or wipe it but upgrading my Toshiba didn't mess with the "Toshiba-Stuff".

    I second that!

Generally "Brands" info is on a Partition that cannot be 'deleted' easily. I think from memory that Delpart will completely wipe the disc?
There are several ways to access the Repair section of W10 eg.
Windows 10 Power off 3 times
    Here are the steps how:
    • Press your computer's power button to turn your PC on.
    • While Windows is starting, hold down the power button again for at least 4 seconds. ...
    • Repeat this process of turning your computer on and off with the power button 3 times.
    • The 4th time your computer starts, it will boot into Automatic Repair

Well my dear working friends. I just may have to give up on this computer. Here is what I have done per your advice.
I did make a bootable disk for the USB drive and that didn't work at all. It just ignored the fact that I had a USB in the computer. I then managed to get the windows on a DVD after going through several steps. I also changed the setup to boot from the DVD drive. It ignored that also. Still the full screen colors keep repeating itself.
One time I was able to try to repair Windows but I didn't know the Windows ID number so that was no help. Is there a way to get the Windows 16 or 18 letters of this windows version?
Lastly I did what retiredlearner told me to do:
Press your computer's power button to turn your PC on.
While Windows is starting, hold down the power button again for at least 4 seconds. ...
Repeat this process of turning your computer on and off with the power button 3 times. The 4th time your computer starts, it will boot into Automatic Repair

Lastly I did find Automatic Repair but when it went through a long time repairing it told me to reboot and I got the colors again.
I certainly was disappointed to say the least. I wonder what else I can try before I take the whole thing and throw it in the garbage.
God bless you both for all the help. Thank you. Jean
P.S. At least I am learning a lot more about computers.
