I wonder why KB4497165 from 2020-01 was installed on my AMD-system on May 31? What are they smoking in Redmond?

EDITED: Please, feel free to regard this question as rhetorical since there probably is no answer to it but I had to relieve my frustration with things happening without my consent.

That patch is an oddity because MS has re-released it several times now, for no apparent "new" reason.

I note that the patch is for the operating system which I am assuming is why AMD users get it too - even though it clearly says, (their bold and enlarged font),
And of course, no AMD processors are listed.

However, some AMD processors are vulnerable to the Meltdown and Spectre infections (even though no case out in the wild has been reported for either Intel or AMD) so again, AMD systems get the update too.

The good news is, there has never been any reports of this update causing problems so as Woody notes,

I seem to remember installing (or not installing) an update for Windows 7 regarding the Spectre vulnerability but since then I have migrated via the free upgrade to Windows 10. My second question still stands, though: What are they smoking ... o_O ... ?

I can only assume they are erring on the side of caution - wanting to make sure everyone who has affected processors are protected. This can be important since, no doubt, some of those systems and processors have been sitting in supply chains and never been patched, or they were subject to maintenance actions and restored to factory (unpatched) settings.

    And I'm okay with that.

If Woody says no harm is done and "don't worry about it", you can believe it. I do.
