I went to CCleaner Tools/ Startup I was able to disable CCleaner but I received an Access Denied! notice when trying to disable ESET. Also--while you did not list it, I looked for Malwarebytes and it is not on the list. I checked each item carefully.

Very odd that Malwarebytes' is not on that Start up list. It is possible that it is not actually on the computer or has expired if you have not paid for it. Both ESET Security Suite and Malwarebytes' Premium are paid programs, ESET costs $50 per year and Malwarebytes' Premium costs $40 per year so I would strongly recommend that you actually Uninstall them both. You will save yourself nearly $100 per year and be able to use the excellent built in security programs that come with Windows 10.

Do this by going to Control Panel>Programs and Features. First Uninstall ALL listings for ESET. You likely will have to reboot the computer to complete this. Once that is done then do the same for all listings for Malwarebytes'.

This way you will know that neither program can possibly interfere with your Windows Updates and those are truly Vital that you get in order to keep the computer safe and secure. When you uninstall both of these then Windows Defender will automatically turn on and give you protection needed.

4/25/2020 Yesterday was a long day. After resolving the CCleaner issue with ESET, I went to Malwarebytes and I'm not sure what I did but I thought I closed it-more about that later. I followed your comprehensive directions fully, found the update site, and once I started the process it seemed like there was one update after another which took all afternoon. When the download finished I went to "winver" and found "version 1909 OS Build 18363.778" which is I think the latest. jholland 1964, I want to thank you so much for your help-you have no idea what a load off my mind your help has taken. Today, I plan to make a contribution to the "board" as a thank you to you and other knowledgeable contributing members who take the time to help out others who are in need. Thank you again jholland!!!
    PS
This morning when I came to the computer I had a message from Malwarebytes that a scan produced 2 trojans and recommended quarantine--I thought the program was closed.

I am considering this move! I just renewed both of the programs in the last 90 days.

I am so pleased you are now fully up to date. Your computer now "should" automatically update. Generally updates for Windows 10 are released on Tuesdays, might come a bit later so don't panic, remember there are millions of us using Windows and they can only give the updates to so many people at a time. If you see that updates are not happening you can of course again follow the process that you just completed to be sure you get them.

The Malwarebytes' program WOULD automatically restart after all those updates were done. Be sure to allow it to Quarantine whatever it found. If you decided that you do not want to keep it then I would recommend that you use the instructions and tool found on this page to fully remove Malwarebytes' Premium.

You can download and install the FREE version which is a manual scanner if you wish. I have it and use it once a week to manually run a scan, "just in case", but thus far I have had super protection from Windows Security.

I know this thread is marked "Resolved" but I wanted to chime and say this is an example of WindowsBBS at it's best. Several pros providing guidance and clarifying points to a member self identified as "not a pro". I consider myself somewhere in the middle but I picked up a few points along the way and, no doubt, bsilverfox gained a great deal of assurance and confidence in the process. Well done all.

Since you just paid for them of course you can keep them but just remember to turn each off when you see if you have Updates Available because it is very likely the reason that you were so far behind. Then next year when the time comes to renew them I would give them up and stick with Windows Defender.

I have copied the link you provided to have on hand should I discontinue Malwarebytes when my subscription runs out. Will the Windows Defender Security Program automatically take over or does it have to be set up.? Thanks again.

To answer your question, Yes, when you uninstall your ESET and Malwarebytes' Windows Defender will automatically take over and requires NO set up. I am very pleased with it and do not hesitate to recommend it to anyone using Windows 10. I had previously used the Windows Defender Firewall on my Windows 7 computers and used Avira Free Antivirus for my AV program and had done the same when I first purchased my Windows 10 computer but after seeing so many recommendations to also use the Windows Defender Antivirus program on Windows 10 from so many people I trust and have relied upon for good advice that I uninstalled Avira and went with built in Windows Defender AV & Firewall. I am very pleased with the results and have all confidence that my computer is well protected.
I do use the Free Malwarebytes' to scan each week but all scans have been 100% clean. So all is good. I highly recommend Windows Defender Security for your Windows 10 computers.
