    I saw Pete's post about an upgrade from 7 to 10, I don't know if this is the best place to post this question.
    I just resurrected an older laptop with Win7 by replacing the power receptacle and am working from home with it for email and such.
    there is a database accessing program i tried to install and when I run it, i get a missing api-ms-win-crt-runtime-[1-1-0.dll error.
    I understand its part of visualC++.
    There were options to download visual studio from MS, i don't know if its still possible or if it would crash this machine.
    do you think it would be worth the upgrade to 10? is it even possible on this laptop?
    Thanks in advance to any and all responses.
    Hope the screenshot is readable.

    Upgrade will depend on your laptop hardware being able to meet W10 requirements and you must have your W7 OS operating without errors and all MS updates installed on it.
    Get a check on MS compatibility first.

    Okay thanks guys, I ran MS update through add remove programs updater hoping I'd get win7 updated.
    It showed before and after that I have Win7 Home edition premium on Speccy.
    It did update MS Visual C++ showing 2005, 2008 and 2010 all refreshed today.
    It also updated office to 2007. I see there are two MSXML 4.2 SP2 entries that were updated today too.
    I'm guessing the version of Win7 I have is the last one I can get due to MS support is gone.
    Is there an option to fix the api-ms-win-crt-runtime-[1-1-0.dll error i am getting?
    Can I put a later version of Visual C++ on this OS or am I done?

    I would be tempted to get the W7 Product Key and save it to paper.
    Procure a 500GB SSD and install that in the Laptop. Your DDR2 RAM is not fast by todays standards and an SSD would speed it up.
    If there is no info you require on the Laptop, using the MS MCT (Media Creating Tool) you can download this and use the ISO on a flash drive or burn a DVD.
    You start the Laptop with the Media (Flash or DVD) and follow the instructions. Insert your W7 Product key when requested and sit back and watch the install.
    I recently built myself a (quick) desktop unit (having my final splash out) and used a 256GB M.2 NVMe SSD card with 3500/3000 MB per second Read and Write speed which I used for the OS (W10 Pro on USB thumb drive) and a 500GB SSD for the "D" drive.
    I used my old W7 Pro 64bit Product Key as the Upgrade tool. All worked a treat
    One more suggestion would be to go to the Toshiba website and identify your Laptop and have a look to see if that model will run OK with W10 upgrade.

    Thanks for all the replies, this is the first place I go when I have a windows issue.
    Not sure I want to push this thing into 10 yet retiredlearner.
    Over the weekend I did the windows update 3 times and each time I got further and further along until I stopped at a good version of 7,SP1. Even got an updated version of MS Office.
    Unfortunately, my issue with the dll persisted so after looking a a link from PeteC, I found a post with a link to MS Visual C++ 2015 download. It was actually Microsoft download center and I chose to download rather than the update option.
    Again, this laptop is over 12 years old and I felt like it was worth trying to get a program to work because I am working from home on a project different than my usual duties, I'm a professional pilot when not self isolating. (and there are actual flights)
    The new Visual C++ went in very quickly and my database utility application works fine without the dll error.
    Feeling pretty proud of myself!
    I have a question though, when I run the CCleaner that came with the Speccy utility recommended by PeteC I see many instances of Visual C++ listed in the program list.
    I used CCleaner to remove a bunch of old junk that will not be missed.
    The entries for VisC++ look look like this in the list of installed software:
    microsoft visual C++ 2005 compact
    microsoft visual C++ 2005 redistibutable
    microsoft visual C++ 2005 redistibutable (X64)
    microsoft visual C++ 2008 X86 9.0.30729.4148
    microsoft visual C++ 2008 X86 9.0.30729.6161
    And then finally the one I installed,
    microsoft visual C++ 2015 (x64) 14.0.23026

    Do you think I can safely uninstall all except the last one using CCleaner or should I leave well enough alone?
    Thanks again guys for the assistance,
    Dan

    Hi johnsdp, If your Toshiba is 12 years old I would still go to the Toshiba website to see what was available from there.
    I did this a few years ago when my brother was having trouble with his Toshiba Laptop.;)

    Great to hear that you resolved your issue :) As far as deleting some of the C+++'s I would not - you may break something else. I have 16 incidences on my Win 10 desktop - OS updated from 7 > 8 > 10 over the years - no issues.

    As noted in Mr Bill's link - The short answer is: yes, but you probably shouldn’t. If it ain't broke don't fix it!

    Okay that’s that. I’ll leave all the extra C++. And I’ll check with Toshiba to see if I can work an upgrade.
    I’ve updated other programs and I really am pleased how well this laptop destined for the dumpster is working for me.
    Thanks for all the help, I’ll mark it as solved.
