Recently my computer has started to reboot itself to install updates in the middle of me doing work and has caused a loss of some items, Microsoft seems to be doing updates every few days now some of which are Windows defender updates ( I do not use windows defender as my antivirus ) and other minor so called improvements, is their anyway I can just get windows to download just the important updates and keep the rest off my computer including windows defender updates etc.
    many thanks for any replies.

I have never had Windows Update force a reboot on me while I was using my computer. I have been prompted to reboot, but I always have the option to postpone it until later. Are you saying you don't get any notice?

Delaying updates for 100 days is not a good idea. I recommend a week at most.

You need to make sure in Settings your "active hours" are set to when you use your computer. Also make sure the setting slider to "Show a notification when your PC requires a restart to finish updating" is set to On.

And make sure "Restart this device as soon as possible when a restart is required to install an update" is set to Off. Note, even if set to on, you should get a notice before the restart.

Last, when done for the day, just let your computer go to sleep. That will allow it to make the necessary updates (and reboot) in the middle of the night.

When I am finished for the day with my PC, I always look and see if there is a restart is needed. I go to the Windows Orb and click on Power and it will let me know if it does. If not, I close it out and go pull the sheets over my head and go to sleep. :p
