Hi Bobby, with W10 if you want to put an icon on the Taskbar I use the method of Start > then scroll to the Software Program you want and Right click on it.
A menu will open and then move your mouse over the word More and another Menu shows the option to pin to Taskbar.
I find this works every time. ;)

RL. in some instances what you mentioned works satisfactory, but not in my using desktop icon WindowsBBS. Dragging this icon fails to do so and as some other similar desktop icons. In my personal working, prefer to reducing desktop icons from cluttering the monitor screen and find the Task bar more to my liking.

Bobby - You cannot place an icon which is a URL independently on the Task Bar If you have a WindowsBBS desktop icon which you would like to be on the Task Bar drag it to the Task Bar where a tool tip by the icon 'pin to browser' (your default browser should be shown). Release the mouse button and the WindowsBBS icon will be attached to your browser. To access right click on the browser icon in the Task Bar (see below) and it should be listed there. Click on it to connect.

Pete, thanks for your suggestion which I tried, but on releasing the mouse button, fails to show on Taskbar. A windows does pop up showing various items of which WindowsBBS is displayed, but unable to reopen this window other than repeating procedure.

Bobby - the method I described works in IE and Firefox at least - I will check out Edge which I believe you use. As previously noted you CANNOT pin an icon representing a URL directly to the Taskbar - it will go onto the right click menu of your browser icon on the task bar.

Update - works with Edge too as would be expected see screenshot below ....
