Following a reboot, clicking on a PDF file will open Adobe Reader DC once, but not subsequent tries after that. Adobe Reader DC then won't open either via Start Menu app list or by clicking on a PDF file again in an email attachment or Windows Explorer file list. PDF file type is associated with Adobe Reader DC. I CAN open an old version of Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro (that I have always had on my laptop) at any time and open and view any PDF file.
A reboot does not resolve the problem, just let's me open a pdf once again. A delete and reinstall of Adobe Reader DC did not help either. I have also noticed opening selected Word attachments sometimes will open and sometimes won't. Any suggestions welcome.

Running Dell Inspiron 17 5000 laptop purchased 10/2018 (i.e. relatively new) 16GB memory
    Windows 10 version 1903
    Adobe Reader DC version 20.006.20034

Why not set the default app to -> Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro since it works?

My Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro is an old unsupported version. Looking more for why a reinstalled app, or maybe the file type linking only works temporarily after a reboot, whether Adobe Acrobat DC or some other app/program. Thanks.

I have a vague memory of a situation in which Adobe Reader didn't open as it should. The solution was to disable UAC (User Account Control) and after opening Adobe Reader, if it worked, reenable UAC. This was with Windows 7 but maybe worth a try?

May I suggest you get rid of Adobe Reader completely and try the excellent FREE Reader, Nitro. Works extremely well, never had any problems with it whatsoever. All PDF files that opened in Adobe Reader DO open in Nitro.

I have disabled User Account Control and will see if Adobe Reader DC keeps operating.
I installed Nitro but it does not support secure .fdf files which require Adobe Reader DC to print.
Also saw in a Google Search someone suggested ending Adobe Reader tasks when I encounter this problem. That did not resolve it either.
    Will keep you posted.

After just 2 more days (which included 1-2 reboots for other reasons), the inability to click on pdfs from an email attachment or Windows Explorer list of files and trigger Adobe Reader DC to open occurred again. So shutting off User Account Control did not help. A reboot continues to be the only thing that temporarily resolves the problem and I'm clueless as to why.

Next I found this solution on community.adobe.com and will try it:
Please uninstall Acrobat Reader DC using this cleaner tool Download Adobe Reader and Acrobat Cleaner Tool - Adobe Labs, restart your computer & reinstall it using this link Adobe - Adobe Acrobat Reader DC Distribution.

Here is a final update and then I will mark this thread as solved to close it.

I have not had the problem reoccur. I continue to use Nitro as the app to trigger for .pdfs (free version with limited but adequate functionality) rather than Adobe Reader DC. I do not know if Nitro is the solution, but I'm functional for now. Thanks for all responses.
