How do I configure IE5.5 and Acrobat 5 to display an internet web page that indicates PDF format? It will display HTML format but not PDF. All that comes up us small icon square surrounding a dot, square, and triangle. The rest of the screen is blank.

Curt--Do you mean Acrobat Reader 5 or Acrobat 5?
I have Reader, not Acrobat, so my comments are based on that. Perhaps you have not associated .pdf files to open with acrord32.exe. In Start|Settings|Folder Options|File Types tab, scroll to Acrobat Acrobat Document, highlight and click Edit, click (highlight) "open" in the Actions box, click Edit. In the box "Application used to perform action ", I have "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 5.0\Reader\AcroRd32.exe" "%1" (including quotes). Do you?
You could enter manually (then click OK), or try holding down Shift and right click any .pdf file (not sure if the active link on the web will work). That should give you a drop down menu including "Open with... ". Click on it, scroll to AcroRd32 , highlight, and check box at bottom "Always use this program... ", click OK.
I do not think you have to do any configuration with IE.
