OS is 64bit Windows 7 Pro SP1. The first update I'm unable to install is KB2310138 (MS Security Essentials), which initially returned an error code of 80070005. After running the System and Security troubleshooter and again attempting to install it, the error code returned was 80070002.

The second update is KB4534310 (2020-01 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems). It returns error code 80073701.

I've researched these error codes online, but none of the suggested fixes correct the problem. Any suggestions here would be greatly appreciated. TIA.

Hi Christer. I read through your thread some time ago, but didn't find anything that helped me. I'm getting ready to upgrade to Win 10 Pro, even though I really don't want to. My system has remained bootable, but I have at least two "minor" problems ... 1) in any 2-pane help window the right pane is blank. 2) the wheel button on my MS IntelliMouse Optical, which I use to double-click, no longer loads on startup; I have to manually start it ... I have to open the Control Panel, and click on "Mouse". When the Mouse Properties window opens Double-click is already loaded in the Wheel Button window, but I have to wait a few seconds, then click on the OK button. It's a nuisance, but I've gotten used to it.

I too was hesitating to the last minute but when Windows 7 had its neck on the proverbial chopping block, I did the deed and now I wonder why I didn't do it sooner!

What is your system backup situation? Maybe you could restore an image from a point in time when everything worked and take it from there?
