Hello, and Happy Holidays to all!

I am hoping someone can help me with a problem I've had for the better part of a month. My system is Win 10 Pro, 64-bit, with 12GB RAM, and the usual stuff.

When I visit the Windows Update page in Settings, I see a couple of messages:

    "You're not up to date
    Last checked today, 4:25 PM

    ... and ...

"Your device is missing important security and quality fixes." [This line in red]

So, I have tried to restart the system, then run Windows Update; no joy. I've run the Troubleshooter for Windows Update; again, no joy. It even returns with this message:

"Troubleshooting couldn't identify the problem. You can try exploring other options that might be helpful." [But doesn't list any of those other options.]

It seems to be related to BITS service, but I can find no other information on the problem.

It's been going on for a while now, do please know that I do not want anybody to jump on this problem until after the holiday this week. I can certainly live with this situation ...

Again, Happy Holidays to everyone on Windows BBS. And, thank you for whatever help you may give me.

You say that "It seems to be related to BITS service, but I can find no other information on the problem." but you didn't say HOW you know this. However, the BITS (Background Intelligent Transfer Service) Must be running in order to receive updates. Correct setting for this in Windows Services is Startup Type: Automatic (Delayed) so check your Windows Services and make sure that is the setting you have and be sure that it IS running.

When I first checked, it was running. After your response I checked BITS again, and it was in a strange state. I've tried to attach an image of the Properties, with the Status in the background. Note it says "running" but the status is not running, but blank, with Manual as the startup. Properties said Automatic/delayed start, as you suggested.
As for how I knew BITS was involved, I'm having a senior moment and cannot remember in which area it returned that message. Possibly from the Troubleshooter for Windows Update, but I'm really not sure.
    My bad, for certain.
I'm not sure how to post a screen shot here ...
    Thanks again, for your help.

It cannot be Manual start up, it must be Automatic because it IS required to be running in order to get Updates. You need to change that

And I did, soon as I saw it was incorrectly set.

A couple of house have gone by since I did that, and the setting is back to Manual. Do you have any suggestions on how to make it permanently set to Auto/delayed?

Also, in dependencies, the DCOM is set to automatic, and running correctly, but End Point is not even there!

    Again, thank you,

Yep, I did click apply. I'm getting older, but I do still remember the critical stuff :). I just sometimes realize how hard I have to work to keep up with the tech now.

RPC Endpoint is set properly and running, and so is BITS now, set properly and running as Auto/Delayed start.

So I clicked Check for Updates again, and the same error message is there, even after a restart with these settings as they're supposed to be. I seem to recall something about Safe Mode/Networking being required for resolving this kind of thing. But then, as I said, it's a while back on earlier versions of Windows ... I'm going to look at the link you sent me.

    Again, thanks for your help.

I am not certain that you really are missing too many updates as you are running the same version I am and my last updates were installed 12/11/19. What date is given on yours when you check on Update history? Not winver but Settings, Updates & Security, Update History

Alex, just another thing to remember, it always pays to SHUT DOWN your comp and then START again after any changes are made to Windows OS.
This allows the changes to take affect but also as Judy said make sure you APPLY the change before exiting.
It may take a few moments of time but it does enable the process to take place correctly. ;)

    There should be other updates listed along with those. The ones I have installed in December are;
    KB4533002,
    KB4530684

    Hi there,

As for updates, from View Update History ... I have, for Dec 11:
    KB4484196,
    KB4461613,
    KB4533002,
... and more, but for Office from the same date.

    Back to Windows, Dec 11:
    KB4530864,
... and the rest are earlier than Dec 11.

And yes, I always do apply before doing a Restart. I haven't always done a complete shut down after updates, though. I was a beta tester for MS starting in 1993 and ending in 2010, when my health prevented my taking enough time at the computer. But I've been a professional techie - System Admin/Analyst - for more than 30 years before retiring, so while I'm not as sharp as I used to be, I'm also not as stupid as I appear to have been lately. ;) Like the saying goes, "I'm getting too old for this ...!"

I hope to get this resolved soon, as those warning words in bright bold red bother me tremendously. Like a bad omen ...

Again, thanks everybody for your help.

Your computer appears to be fully up to date, at least you have exactly the same updates that I have so honestly don't know why you would be getting this alert. I am sure somebody else can offer a suggestion.

Thanks, Judy, for all your help.

l, too, hope someone else has a solution. I've reported it using Win Feedback, but the chances of a MS developer getting back to me are slimmer than my winning the big lottery prize ...

    Cheers,
    a.

Alex from what I have found this is a glitch that first happened several years ago, apparently it has happened again with you. Honestly, I would just ignore it. You know you are up to date, I know you are up to date. I am sure somebody will come by with a solution.

It occurred to me, way after closing this item, that it might be related to a device other than my PC itself. Like, maybe a printer, or the Bluetooth issue I have, or something like it. Could that be possible?

    Just curious.
