Today I received an e-mail from Malwarebytes that version 4.0 is available. In the e-mail was this information about the new version:

We redesigned Malwarebytes for Windows inside and out to be more intuitive, tougher on threats, and easier on your PC. Here's what's new in Malwarebytes 4.0...

    • A new detection engine that's smarter than ever
The new Malwarebytes Katana Engine is better than ever at stopping threats. It also gives you info about the threats it finds, so you can make smarter security decisions.
    • A completely redesigned interface that makes security quick and easy
We completely redesigned the user interface to be more intuitive and easier to use. Spend less time fiddling with your security settings and more time enjoying your PC.
    • Improved performance and efficiency
The new Malwarebytes was designed with your PC's and performance in mind. Scans now use 50 percent less CPU resources than before.

When I attempted to get the update through my existing MB 3.8 (Free), the program said I was already running the latest version (3.8), so I did a Google search and used this link to successfully download and install MB 4.0:

You just got this notice? ??? That is a bit odd (to me anyway) because as seen here, V4.0 was released for distribution on Nov 4th. The current version is V4.04.49.

It should be noted they did slowly "roll out" the V4.0 update so their severs would not be swamped with millions of users trying to grab the update all at once. But 4 weeks to get notice seems like a long time to me.

Has this computer been turned off much of that time?

No, the computer has been on almost the entire time. In view of what you say, it's odd that when I tried yesterday to get the update through my exiting version, it told me my version (MB 3.8) is the current version and I had to go through Google to the MB website to get the update. Another computer mystery.

Well, I am sure you were still safe and no doubt you were still getting the most recent malware definition/signature updates. I know when 3.0 came out, it took me a long time to be notified too. I would not worry about it.

    Bobbo,
I have the Pro (paid) version and I don't recall getting a notice of the 4.0. Only after your post, I opened Malwarebytes and manually searched for the 4.0 version and downloaded and installed it.

Correction - I just scanned through my trash and did find information included in the November Malwarebytes Newsletter - although it was down towards the bottom - I guess I trashed the Newsletter before I got down that far.

virginia, I checked my Inbox, Trash and even my Junk folder, all the way back to November 1, and found no messages from MB. Maybe your using the Pro version and my using the Free version accounts for the difference. Version 4.0 is running fine, I'm just surprised I wasn't notified of the update until Tuesday and my MB 3.8 wasn't aware of an update when I tried to get it from the program itself.

Hi BOBBO, I'm wondering why your version 3 didn't Update your version to 4.0.4.49 as mine has done.
I started Malwarebytes and when the scan starts, it's first job is to check for updates.
My HP Notebook had version 3 running and it took about 5 minutes to do the update check as it was installing version 4.0.4.49 over the old version!
This was slow because it was over WiFi. Total scan time was 10m 56s and 432,572 items scanned.
This is the FREE version. ;)

retiredlearner, That's what has mystified me, too.

It took me longer to find the update than it did to download and install it. Works fine now.

That really should not matter unless you just happen to have a very very slow wifi connection.

Yes Bill, I had noticed that this Download with my main comp (cable direct to Router/Modem) was quicker than the Notebook which is WiFi.
There are possibly great variances in hardware between the two machines but the Download did include installing over the previous version.
Not a worry as it only happened with MBAM on this one occasion.

Hard to tell what happened without knowing more about your network. It is likely your Ethernet computer can connect (in theory, anyway) at speeds up to 1Gbps. Wifi is dependent on your supported wifi protocol (802.11g or 11n, 11ac, etc.), band (2.4GHz, 5GHz), and all sorts of things (distance, walls, other networks, etc) that can interfere with the propagation. The main thing is, you were able to update so that's good.
