Ever since the last Windows 10 update, I find I can no longer add a "new contact" to my contacts folder. The drop-down menu no longer offers a new contact to be chosen from among all other options. Is there some way I can add that option to my drop-down window in my Contacts folder?

Right now the only items mentioned in the drop-down window for "New" are folder, shortcut, presentation document, Rich text document, Text maker document, or Text document. In the past it also offered "contact" but that is no longer there for me to choose.

    Thank you,
    Sandie

It would help if you told us exactly where you are looking for this and what email program you are using.

I received 3 updates on that date, and the one you mentioned is one of them. The other two are: Update for .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8 for Win10 Ver1903 for x65 ( KB4514359 ) and For Adobe Flash Player
    ( KB4516115 )

Anyway, it was after that update I tried to add a new "contact" to my Contact folder.

As for my e-mail program, I use Thunderbird. I was able to add a new entry to their address book, but I wanted to add the entry to my Windows Contacts folder. That is the one I go to all the time when looking up an address, phone number or whatever information I might need about someone or business I need to contact for some reason. Thunderbird seems to assimilate my contacts into their address book because I've never sat here and actually entered any names or address into that address book. I believe they imported them from my Windows Contacts folder, so that is the one I go to also when I need information from someone I have listed there.

Isn't there some way you can add folders or programs to your drop-down window? I seem to recall several years ago reading how to add programs to that function but can't remember at the moment.

    Thanks,
    Sandie

Oh, sorry. I thought this was a problem with an email program. I've never used the Contacts. Sorry

No problem. Me, I've never used the Windows e-mail program since they got rid of Outlook Express, but I use my Contacts file ALL THE TIME! It's been a little frustrating the past day or so. :)

I don't use the Contacts cause it requires you to set up a Windows account which I refuse to do.

Sandie, in your TB email > Menu > hover over Options > Account Settings > Composition and Addressing > Addressing > click on Global Addressing Preferences > check your settings there.
It would appear the MS Contacts taps into TB email Address book anyway.

OK, I tried that, but in my TB options>composition> addressing..............there is no "Global Addressing Preferences for me to check. In "Default startup directory in the address book window: I have "All Address Books" checked, but there is no "Global addressing preferences" mentioned there either.

    Sorry. :(

Sandie, in W10 > Start > scroll to People > and follow the instructions makes your contacts addresses available from your Email Address book/s.
Is this what you are using or are you using Outlook contacts?
TB instructions I listed all work in 3 of my comps. At the bottom of the page of Composition & Addressing, there is a framed Global Addressing Preferences.
If you click on that frame (which is active) it opens Addressing page where you can access Address Autocompletion.
My TB version is 68.1.0 (32-bit).

I found the Tools, Account Settings, Composition & Addressing in TB mail program after I saw the photo that Jholland1964 posted, and I did as you suggested. It made no difference to my Contacts Folder.

Then I went to Win10>start>People and followed that app importing the Windows names and addresses from somewhere. Neither accomplished what I am trying to do.

When I set up this computer I imported my contacts from both my Hotmail and Gmail accounts into the "Contact" folder. And I have used that as my address book all along. It is found at This PC> Desktop> Contacts. It is also listed in This PC> Windows > Users> Sandilewy73> Contacts.........................AND GUESS WHAT?

By following the path to the original folder so I could write it down on here for you, I see that here I am able to add a "New Contact". At the top of the app it has all these many options, and adding a new contact is one of them. So now I can add the new contact, but I guess I will have to follow this route every time I want to add a new one. Because the folder that is on my Desktop no longer allows me to do that. It is no longer listed in the drop-down window under "New". I can add a new folder or new document, or whatever. But "contact" is no longer there, and it has always been there before.

So I have just had this folder pinned to my Start menu, to make it easier to find. I also checked if the new contact I have just added to it was showing up in the Contacts folder that is on my Desktop, and it is not. Somehow that folder has stopped functioning as it always did in the past. Why, I have no idea, but I now have another Contacts folder I can work with. So for me the problem has been solved.

We've reached this in a roundabout way, but I thank you both for all of your help. We have accomplished what I wanted to do. I will not mark it as solved just yet, in case either of you have something you want to add. If not, I will come back and mark it as solved. OK?

Again, thank you, both of you, for any and all help. I really appreicated it.

    Sandie

Remember that no longer working Contacts on your desktop is only a short cut to PC> Windows > Users> Sandilewy73> Contacts. This means, to me at least, that this SHORT CUT is broken. This is not uncommon for a short cut to be broken and 9 out of 10 times this would have nothing to do with an update, it is just something that happens. You should be able to create a new short cut by first deleting that non-working desktop short cut (right click-Delete) and creating a new one by Right clicking that newly pinned Start Menu folder (which also is really just a shortcut to the actual folder) but right click on that and choose Send To...one of the choices is, or should be, Desktop (Create Shortcut) This should get your desktop shortcut back. You can also do the same from PC> Windows > Users> Sandilewy73. Just right click on the Contacts folder and choose Send to Desktop(Create Shortcut)

Yes, you are absolutely right. It took me a few minutes for that to sink in, but I did "get it" eventually. LOL
You are also right about the other "shortcut" folder becoming corrupt in some way, and it having nothing to do with the last update. It was simply that I had the problem so soon after the update, I wrongly assumed the update might have caused the problem. Thank you for reminding me of this and I have put that faulty folder into the trash can.

So, now all my ducks are in a row, the problem is solved, and I am good to go. Again, THANK YOU for all the help and suggestions and whatever. I am happy to mark this one solved. :)

Yes I am RT, and I thank you too. Without both of you, I would still most likely be floundering!
But as it stands now, everything is a GO!

    Sincerely,
