I've always been able to change the color of my taskbar with no problems, but the other day, not sure if my finger slipped and hit something it should not have, or when my cat walked across the keyboard, she might have stepped on a wrong key at the wrong time.

I was in Personalization settings, changing my background theme for the desktop. Everything was going fine, then suddenly the color of my taskbar and control panel changed to some blah gray, no idea why or how it happened. But when I go to settings: color: and there is a box to check for Start, taskbar and action center...................it's grayed out, and I am not able to check it so that it will be included in the color I chose. I've been trying to figure out what went wrong for 3 days, and I'm really frustrated by now.

Can anyone help me? It seems like such a small matter. The computer is working just fine in every other way, but this is really frustrating because I can't figure it out.

Have you rebooted to see what would happen?

During your 3 days of trying have you Shut down the comp and started it again?
If all else fails > Start > Settings > Update and Security > Recovery > choose the option to save files > follow the instructions
Keep cat away from keyboard until it learns how to use the comp! ;)

Yes I did because this morning I installed the latest update, and had to reboot for the installation to complete. I was hoping that would do the trick, but it didn't work, sorry to say. :)

I am sure there is a way it can be corrected without having to use the "restore" function, and yes I have rebooted, and it didn't solve the problem.

As for the cat, she grew up laying on my chest while I used the computer as a 6-week old kitten, or laying in front of the monitor, right above the keyboard. That was almost 18 years ago. She is much less stable on her feet these days, but she can't seem to stay away from "Mommy" when she's on the PC, so she tries to maneuver around the keyboard, but more and more these days, she will stumble and her feet go not where she intended, and catching me off guard occasionally, and that happened the day my taskbar changed colors I didn't choose for it. :D Now I just need to find out how to change them back or get the system to allow me to check that box.

That is why I suggested a Restore as it should bring your comp back to a state before the cat's paw trick.
You have no way of finding out which key/s or combination caused the problem.
It may seem drastic but I don't think it will cure itself. :(o_O :)

    Yessir Evan Omo,

I did exactly what those instructions said to do.............well, I tried to anyway. But where it shows a checkbox for "start, taskbar and action center," the box is faded or greyed out, and I am not able to check that box. If I could I would have fixed this problem by now. :)

On the 'Color' screen, select a custom color, not light or dark. Then choose your default Windows mode as dark and default app mode as light. Now you can select Start, taskbar, and action center. Then re-adjust the theme to dark or light again and you should be able to re-adjust the color of the taskbar.

    THANK YOU EVAN OMO!!

I did exactly as you just instructed, and IT WORKED!! I never noticed before that those blocks for dark and light, how they were marked. I am going to
The last instructions from Evan Omo (Nickname: Terminator) talked about the boxes for light and dark. I had both boxes checked for "light" and you can't do that. One must be set for light, one for Dark, so there is contrast I imagine. So now I have one marked "light" and one marked "dark" and that made it possible for me to check the box for "Start, taskbar, and action center." Before when I had both color boxes checked for "light" the "Start, taskbar, and action center" box was greyed out, and I was not able to place a check in that box so that my taskbar would be the color I wanted it to be. Now it is!! It was such an easy fix, thank goodness.
