My HP Pavilion 17, approaching 5 years old, has developed a new and worsening problem during boot.

I've been getting a BSOD, during boot, with increasing frequency for a number of weeks. The error says that a driver got stuck in an infinite loop.

Since this is the first time I've needed to do this in Win7, how do I determine which driver is causing the BSOD? Alas, the screen, despite giving several hex codes, doesn't reveal the offending driver.

The BSOD has appeared at several points in the boot process, and the most mysterious part is that it's not consistent. I don't know if it's a buggy updated driver or a component going bad.

The boot recovery system has not helped. Asking it to go back to a known good configuration hasn't made a difference (possibly because the intermittent issue has caused the current drivers to be flagged as "good"). And to let it scan for issues just sits with the bar scrolling infinitely.

Booting into safe mode seems to work flawlessly every time.

In addition to diagnostic info, any ideas what might be going wrong with the system? It's an older machine but I don't want to throw it in the trash just yet. Model 17-f001dx
