I tried searching here for an answer, and did find one topic, but I'm not sure it answered my question.

Since switching to W10, my wife is having fits trying to keep her embroidery files sorted in her folders. Seems like they are always moving from where she puts them. In trying to determine if I can disable the auto sort, I keep coming up with a 3rd party software solution that involves editing the registry. Any ideas? Thanks

    We need more information.

How are her files displayed? By icons? As a list? Details?

If one of the list options, what heading?

And when they auto-sort, do they go into some order, or appear to be totally random?

Finally, you say "folders" - are these folders really subfolders to one "Embroidery" folder? Or does it happen with all folders?

There no sort category of "File name and number" so I am assuming you mean just "Name" and then "Ascending".

Not sure what you mean by "picks a spot".

On the Desktop, right click then hover the mouse pointer over View and see if "Auto arrange icons" and "Align icons to grid" are checked. I don't like my icons to auto arrange either so I don't have that checked. But I do like them to align in straight rows and columns so I have Align icons to grid checked.

I played with my desktop auto arrange, If the desktop is set to do that, does that mean that the folders will do that as well? And if it's unchecked, the folders won't?

I'm still not sure what you mean by "picks a spot" and "attempts to place". This suggests to me she is trying physically move (drag and drop) the icon into a certain place and then expect it to stay there.

The only way to ensure they go "on order" is to make sure the names are in the correct alphanumeric order.

I've always said that there aren't many people who are smarter than a computer, and the computer usually wins. I've tried to impress upon her how important it is to pay attention to details when attempting to save these files, as one digit, dot or letter out of order will cause her problems.
My initial query was if there was any easy way to disable auto sort in file folders. I'll mark this as solved as everything seems to be working as it should.
