I’m having an issue hard wiring an Acer Aspire 5733 laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium. When connected to the Comcast modem model CGM4140com I open the Network Connections/ Local Area Network and it reads,” Network cable unplugged Broadcom Net link Ethernet. When I run diagnostics on the adapter the message reads no Ethernet cable connected or broken. I did use several different Cat5 cables. I currently use the wireless connection, but would like to take advantage of the 1GB router from Comcast. I also have two other Acer Aspire using the wireless connection, but have the same issue. Any assistance would be appreciated. As always, thank you.

Just to clarify, "hard" wired means the wires are permanently connected, as in soldered, or at least crimped. So the RJ-45 connectors are "hardwired" to the ends of the Ethernet cables. But since the Ethernet cables can be connected (plugged in) and disconnected (unplugged) to and from the Ethernet ports on your computer and modem, they are just "wired" not "hard" wired. It may seem nit-picky but when discussing technical issues, it is important to use the correct technical terminology when possible to ensure all are on the same page.

With that out of the way, you said,
What does, "have the same issue" mean? Are you saying if you try to connect to your network via Ethernet (wired), neither notebooks will connect?

While possible it is unlikely the Ethernet adapters in both notebooks failed at the same time. Did they used to work?

And since you have tried different Ethernet cables, that points me to the Ethernet port on your modem/router. They can fail too. Have you tried a different port on your modem/router?

Have you tried these notebooks on a different network (perhaps a friend's or relative's home network)?

Just a silly idea - but would you need to disconnect your wireless connection to enable a wired connection to be made?

Try using a cat 5 for one of the other computers to verify that the LAN ports on the router are working.

Yes, I'm trying to connect the laptop port to the modem with a copper cable. And yes I tried a different port on the modem/router.
    Thank you

Yes, I disabled the wireless connection. Thank you.

That gateway has only 2 ethernet ports.
    Access the router control panel:
    http://10.0.0.1
Login and verify that the ethernet ports are enabled in settings.

I logged into the modem/router under hardware and the following message appeared, " Port inactive until cable is connected". I replaced the cable again and the port immediately became active. 2 defective Cat5 cables. Had you not replied and me not knowing to check the modem/router settings this may have gone on for ever. I do thank you tremendously. Just a great group of guys.
