I'm having a problem with the USB3 port on my laptop powering off randomly. It's not consistent when it happens and rebooting the computer will always bring it back to life for a while. It may work for an hour or any number of hours. I've unchecked the boxes on the advanced power plan and they remain unchecked. This laptop has acted like this from purchase. The laptop this replaced never had this issue. I keep thinking I'm having a setting problem rather than a software issue.

This is an: Acer Aspire EI-572
    i5-4200@1.GH 2.30 GH
    Win 7 Pro 64 bit SP1

This laptop is used for my drag racing weather station and is dedicated to that function only. While it is up to date it's rarely online.

Looks like a hardware problem. If it's still under warranty, get it looked at.

It's not under warranty anymore. I've checked under Device Management and all appears well there. I've made sure that the drivers are up to date. When I searched the forum for any other threads related to this all the fixes were what I've already done. Is there a way I can test the hardware? When the problem first appeared I consulted one of the moderators on this board, a personal friend and fellow racer, and he suggested moving from a 2.0 port to a 3.0 port as the 3.0 provided more power. It worked for a few weeks and then back to it's old tricks.
I have to note here that the computer itself actually powers the weather station. Then another port transmits the data to the driver at the start line. This weekend the software developer and seller of the weather program spent an hour in my trailer with my computer and was not able to solve this.

That's certainly sounds like a viable option to me. My trailer is powered by an invertor generator while at the track. Adding a powered USB hub would be just as easy as plugging it in to the existing power strip. I don't race again until the 22nd so I won't really be able to test this until then.

I spoke to the Weather station manufacturer and inquired how many amps their station drew. It draws 200 MA. My unit is 7 years old so I figure it may draw twice that. So I purchased a Targus four port powered USB hub. Hooked it up here at home and it seemed to run fine for the 8 hours I had it plugged in. I powered it up the next morning to see if it still worked and had nothing. In a short time the weather station head began to emit the dreaded burning electronics smell. I disconnected as fast as I could. The computer began to act funny after that. So, $425 later I received a new weather station. Now, the computer will not power up the weather station. In fact, the cable (com port) is not even seen in the Device Manager screen. The USB (com port) to the transmitter is seen though. I reinstalled Windows 7 Pro thinking some drivers may be corrupted. That was no help at all. We do have a Win10 laptop here that will receive weather readings and transmit that information to the pager as it should. I'm not a fan of Win10. It's too fiddly for my tastes and I'd rather use to Win7 laptop.

Your hardware seems to be fried. Can't see how you can salvage the situation.

I agree. While it still works otherwise, it's now useless for the task at had.
